JOSEPH SELTZER Obituary

SELTZER DR. JOSEPH LOUIS On Saturday, October 9, 2021, DR. JOSEPH LOUIS SELTZER, loving husband, father of four children, and grandfather to seven grandchildren, passed away at the age of 76. Joe, as he was known to friends and family, was born on May 25, 1945, in Darby, Pennsylvania to Allen Louis and Mathilde Catherine (nee Comerford) Seltzer and grew up in South Orange, NJ. He graduated from St. Joseph's University, in Philadelphia in 1967 with a B.S. in biology. He went on to attend Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia and graduated with his medical degree in 1971. Joe had a long and illustrious career as an Anesthesiologist. In 1975, he began his career as a Major in the Medial Corps as a Staff Anesthesiologist at the USAF Medical Center on Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, OH. In 1977, after an honorable discharge, he went to Syracuse, NY, where he was an Assistant Attending Anesthesiologist at State University Hospital. In 1980, he accepted an Attending Anesthesiologist position at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, in Philadelphia, PA. He spent over 30 years at Thomas Jefferson rising to the position of Chairman of Anesthesiology (1984-2002) during which he grew and developed the group into a university based academic department. In 1984, Joe was the lead anesthesiologist on the team that performed the first liver transplant at Jefferson. He then went on to become Vice-Dean for Clinical Affairs (2002-2005), and finally Senior Associate Dean for CME, Faculty and Alumni Affairs (2005-2012). During his medical career Joe served on many local, region, and national committees and boards, including the American Board of Anesthesiology (1985-2010), the Pennsylvania Society of Anesthesiology from 1985-2010 (President 1993-1996), and the Society of Academic Anesthesiology Chairs from 1984-2002 (President 1995-1998). From 1973 through 2008, Joe published 53 articles in peer reviewed publications. In that same period of time published 82 abstracts, and wrote chapters for numerous medical textbooks. Upon retirement, Joe enjoyed delving into classic novels he never had a chance to read during his medical career. Joe was also an avid golfer and spent many happy days on the golf course with his friends, at the Philadelphia Country Club, in Gladwyne PA, Hershey's Mill Golf Club in West Chester, PA, and Hawk's Nest Golf Club Vero Beach, FL. He was also a member of the Philadelphia Seniors Golf Association since 2013. Joe also loved to travel with his wife of 51 years, traveling extensively throughout the world to diverse places such as Antarctica, Egypt, Iceland, China, and Europe. In recent years, he was learning to play bridge. Joe is survived by his wife Dr. Suzanne Frankhouser Seltzer, his four children, Gwendolyn Ann (and her husband Gregory Weller), Joseph Louis Jr. (and his wife Zhang-Min), Gregory Parke (and his wife Natasha) and Erica Marie (and her husband Kevin Gaffney), and his brother Allen (and his wife Susan), in addition to numerous nieces and nephews. Joe, you must be pulling the strings up there....the Phils and Eagles keep winning. Keep working your magic. Unfortunately golf will never be the same without the home and away summer member guest events.....but our Streak lives on ......

Joe is smiling up in heaven. The Phillies made the playoffs and the Eagles are undefeated . I really miss our annual home and away golf events. I still count on Joe's advice to navigate the many challenges in academic medicine . He was one of a kind ! My very best to his family and friends.

Dr. Seltzer was always supportive and fair as my chairman while always expecting excellence. I was so well prepared for taking care of any patient. He cared for my personal wellbeing. I am so sad that I never thanked him for believing in me and sending me on my way to a long, happy career. He was so matter -of-fact about my abilities that he made me believe in myself. So sad for your loss.

Dr Joseph Seltzer was a scholar and visionary. He respected those who wanted to work hard to reach the top, irregardless of their race or sex. I thank God for Dr Seltzer, who saw my drive, good characteristics and offered me a fighting chance.
I successfully completed the anesthesia residency program that he chaired in 1989. Peace and blessings to his family.

Joe was a long-time member of our Hawk´s Nest golf group. We will miss his good-natured approach to our shenanigans, but most of all we will his gentle spirit. My condolences to the family.

Joe was everything good and great that you could imagine in a Jefferson doctor. He excelled in so many realms yet he retained an air of humility and humor. His contributions are a testament to his talent, his commitment and his dedication. He will be missed.
