I was saddened to learn of Karl´s passing because I grew up with him. Our parents were the best of friends. During the 1930´s our families spent a lot of time together. After the Engelman´s moved to Toms River, we visited them quite often. I still remember the difficult ride home on Sunday evenings before the New Jersey turnpike was built. More recently I reconnected with Karl at the University of Pennsylvania. My late husband, David Garfinkel, had a secondary appointment in the Department of Medicine, and we met Karl at a reception there. After that time we would occasionally meet at the campus until both of us retired.
