Karl Engelman Obituary

Engelman Karl Age 89, of Hilton Head Island died August 19, 2022. Dr. Engelman was born in New York City on June 23, 1933 to Samuel and Lillian Engelman. He spent his early years in Toms River, New Jersey. Karl was a lifelong learner and a devoted educator. He was especially fond of recounting his life lessons whether from the farm he grew up on, elementary school or medical school, and often regarded his most difficult teachers as his most impactful mentors. Throughout life, Karl would be defined by his solid integrity and his expectation for academic rigor. Karl was a graduate of Toms River High School where he met his future wife Elaine. He attended Rutgers University, achieving Phi Beta Kappa as well as Cap and Skull Honors while graduating in 1955. Karl then went on as a scholarship student to Harvard Medical School graduating 1959, completing his internship and residency at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Engelman continued at the National Institute of Health before finally arriving in Philadelphia, becoming a Professor of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. While there, he acted as Chief of the Hypertension and Clinical Pharmacology section in the Cardio Vascular Pulmonary unit as well as the Director of the Clinical Research Center before retiring in 1995. Karl spent his retirement years in Hilton Head, South Carolina where he was active in Volunteers in Medicine and enjoyed helping those in need of medical attention and advice who were not able to find suitable care. Karl is survived by his wife Elaine, sons Harry (Amy) of Palm Beach Gardens, FL, Ross (Elizabeth) of Philadelphia, PA, and Jeff (Kirstin) of Bryn Mawr, PA as well as 8 grandchildren he was proud of and adored, Jacob, Jenny, Jessie, Hannah, Sarah, Ruth, Theodore and Eli. The Graveside Service will be held Thursday, August 25, 2022 at noon at Six Oaks Cemetery in Hilton Head. I was saddened to learn of Karl´s passing because I grew up with him. Our parents were the best of friends. During the 1930´s our families spent a lot of time together. After the Engelman´s moved to Toms River, we visited them quite often. I still remember the difficult ride home on Sunday evenings before the New Jersey turnpike was built. More recently I reconnected with Karl at the University of Pennsylvania. My late husband, David Garfinkel, had a secondary appointment in the Department of Medicine, and we met Karl at a reception there. After that time we would occasionally meet at the campus until both of us retired.
