LOIS ELEANOR HOWLAND

HOWLAND LOIS ELEANOR (NEE JACKMAN) Formerly of St. Louis, MO, died on Saturday evening, August 23, 2025, at Meadowood Senior Living in Worcester, PA. She was the beloved wife of Rev. Dr. Donald G. Howland, with whom she was married for 66 years, and who preceded her in death. Together they raised four sons: James Michael (Dinah) of North Palm Beach, FL, Robert Mark (Samantha) of Cohasset, MA, Thomas Scott (Susan) of Westfield, NJ, and David Matthew (Grace) of Harvard, MA. She dearly loved her 11 grandchildren, Julia, Brenton, Jennifer, Sydney, Rachel, Dylan, Logan, Morgan, Zoena, Olivia, and Delilah, and her two great-grandchildren, Thomas and Alexandra. Born in Philadelphia and raised in Leonia, NJ, Lois graduated from Leonia High School, studied at the College of Wooster, and earned her nursing degree from Columbia University and her RN license from Columbia Presbyterian Hospital. She worked for the Visiting Nurse Association in Princeton, NJ, and as Head Nurse at Carrier Clinic before pausing her career to raise her family. While living in St. Louis, Lois returned to nursing at Washington University School of Medicine, where she co-founded the Cancer Information Center, the first U.S. facility of its kind. She also created "Can Surmounts," a pioneering peer-support program for cancer patients, for which she received the Pioneer Award from the American Cancer Society. Lois was active in her church communities, P.E.O., the Red Cross, and the American Cancer Society. She loved gardening, playing the piano, summers at the Jersey Shore, and most of all, time with her family. Among her happiest memories was welcoming twin sons on Valentine's Day.
