MAUD TIERNEY Obituary

TIERNEY MAUD (nee CAMPBELL) Maud Elizabeth Campbell Tierney Beloved daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and friend, passed away on December 2, 2021 surrounded by family. Maud was born at Pennsylvania Hospital. Her parents, William Taylor and Elizabeth Tompkins Campbell, early on helped instill a love of the ocean, outdoors and travel, which would continue to be passions throughout her life. To her family, friends, and acquaintances, Maud was a woman who brought comfort and laughter through her grace, smile and wit. After graduating from the Agnes Irwin School in 1975, Maud went on to attend Denison University in Ohio. A Bicentennial party on July 4, 1976 led to the serendipitous moment where she met her husband, Brian Tierney – rumored to have "crashed" the party – an encounter that would enrich their lives forever and kick off a 45-year love affair. A quiet and determined woman, Maud then applied and was accepted to the University of Pennsylvania (surprising even her own parents when sharing the news) and transferred to the school to be with Brian during her sophomore year. An avid reader with a love for the arts, music and current affairs, Maud majored in English, graduating in 1979. After marrying on September 6, 1980 at Old St. Joseph's Church in Philadelphia, Maud spent her early career as a paralegal at Wolf Block. Maud and Brian then relocated to Washington D.C. and Atlanta. Maud served in the office of Congressman Don Young (R-Alaska), the longest-tenured member of Congress, before turning to her true love of travel and exploration by working in the travel industry. Maud loved traveling the country and world with her family, visiting more than 62 countries and 47 states. She felt travel – no matter the distance – enriched your life and gave you a deeper appreciation for the beauty of the world and all it had to offer; from new experiences to culture, cuisine, art, music, history and people. Following a promising business career, Maud decided to dedicate her life to her family and children after the births of her sons Brian Jr. in 1982 and Bill in 1985. This period also marked the couple's return to the Philadelphia region, where they have lived happily ever since. While a private person who would rather see others enjoy the spotlight, Maud was tirelessly supportive of her husband's more public career. Maud was a gifted athlete with a love of tennis and physical fitness. She was also an expert at needlepointing, making Christmas stockings and homemade belts for family members designed after their school colors. Her sons consider them some of their most prized possessions. Beyond her family, Maud was incredibly active in the community, supporting the Philadelphia Orchestra, Please Touch Museum, Franklin Institute, a variety of animal shelters, Rosemont School of the Holy Child, and the Philadelphia Zoo – where she co-chaired the annual Zoobilee fundraiser in 1999. With her husband, she gifted the Tierney Dining Hall at The Episcopal Academy. Always focused on giving back, Maud enjoyed volunteering at ElderNet in Bryn Mawr, a nonprofit that helps the elderly remain in their homes with dignity and provides vital food and medical access. She was an active member of ElderNet, sometimes volunteering three times a week, while building deep friendships with those she drove to doctor's appointments, grocery shopping and the pharmacy. At ElderNet, the Maud Campbell Tierney Endowment Fund has been established in her honor. Even in the late stages of Parkinson's, she remained characteristically selfless, always thinking of her family first. A reserved person who yet possessed incredible strength and fortitude, she constantly persevered. After her diagnosis, as part of her daily physical therapy she taught herself to play the piano after one formal lesson, practicing the piano daily as long as she could. Maud is incredibly missed by her entire family and her spirit of love, adventure, gentle humor and empathy will continue to live through each one of them. She is survived by her father, Bill Campbell; her husband, Brian; her son, Brian Jr. and his wife, Lily; her son, Bill and his wife, Jen; and her four beloved grandchildren, Bayard, Haven, Harper and Piper. Maud's legacy will be everlasting in the love she bestowed generously on so many and the kindness she showed everyone she met. A Memorial Service to celebrate a life lived in full will be held on Friday, December 17, at 1 P.M. in the Sanctuary of Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Maud Campbell Tierney Endowment at ElderNet, 9 S. Bryn Mawr Ave., Bryn Mawr, PA 19010, or the Parkinson's Foundation.

Maud enjoyed seeing the funny side of life, and since she was a well read and intelligent person, her jokes were clever and insightful. Extremely kind and always cheerful, she was a beautiful person inside and out. The world is better for her having been here.

Maud was always ready with a smile, but I loved her giggle. We moms at RSHC all had so much fun together. Our children were friends and still are. A beautiful soul who will be missed. Go Gently.

A wonderful family leader who also lead & inspired others with her benevolence for our city, it's cultural platforms and charitable outreach programs. Her legacy will continue in her family as well as through all of the lives she touched and impacted. Philadelphia has lost a treasure & icon.

I am so sad to hear that Maude had Parkinson´s and is no longer with us. My father also had Parkinson´s so I know how hard this disease is on the individual and their family. My prayers go out to the Tierney´s. Also know that I have nothing but warm memories of Maude and the boys at RSHC.

Beautiful memories of the gracious, warm and welcoming Maud, as she enthusiastically hosted those "company" Christmas parties. For those of us lucky enough to be part of BPT´s successful agency family, Maud was a bright, beautiful light. She would always be cheering us on and making us feel like family.
