Nancy Marcus Obituary

Marcus Nancy March 14, 1941 - June 16, 2023 Died at age 82 in the Estuary palliative care suite at Porter Medical Center in Middlebury, VT on June 16, 2023. After being diagnosed with lung cancer in 2021 she decided to forego therapy and lived for almost two more years spending time with George Marcus, her husband of 55 years. Nancy was born in Manhattan, where she grew up and went to school, later graduating from Sarah Lawrence College. After she and George were married, they moved to Philadelphia, and resided there for more than 50 years before permanently relocating to Vermont in 2018. In 1982, foreseeing the great upsurge in America's interest in food and inspired by her collaboration with George on a cookbook devoted to what was then considered unusual fruits and vegetables like mangoes and kale, she opened The Cookbook Stall in the Reading Terminal Market which she ran successfully for 23 years. Before mass market booksellers and the internet, it became one of the few places for professional chefs and home cooks to find cookbooks and resources on cuisine and cooking. In addition to here husband, Nancy is survived by her son David and daughter-in-law Amy Silverman, and their children Sarah and Alex, of Atlanta, Georgia; and son Paul and and daughter-in-law Lisa Marcus, and their sons Andrew, Joshua, and Sam, of Elkins Park, Pennsylvania. Contributions in memory of Nancy may be made to ARCH, palliative care and support services, Porter Medical Center, 115 Porter Drive, Middlebury, Vermont 05753.
