It was the last week of classes at Villanova in 1964, I was a freshman and barely surviving Calculus with Prof Gormley. I had a week to study for the final in his class and went to his office to see if he could suggest how to prepare. At that point in time the derivative concepts just never made sense, like listening to jazz and not getting it. Professor Gormley gave me some old finals to study and work on and everyday up to the exam I met with him briefly to review the material. Either he was kind or I aced the exam because it was the best "C" I ever got in my life. I went on to graduate with a Math minor, got a PhD in Psychology from the University of Vermont and taught at Middlebury College and Castleton University. I have never forgotten the kindness of this man and have credited him many times in my career as a model of what it is to be a teacher and genuinely care. Upon reading of his passing in the Villanova Magazine, my tears are of joy for such a wonderful man. Best to his family and thank you for sharing him.
