CARLINO

PETER DOMENIC CARLINO was born on May 12th, 1921 in Philadelphia, the youngest of nine children, to Vincent and Rosina D'Alphonso Carlino. He attended Our Lady of Pompeii parish school and North East Catholic High School. He attended classes at the University of Pennsylvania and St. Joseph's University. He had a wonderful singing voice and as a teenager sang on Sundays on the Children's Radio Hour.
In 1945, he married his wife Elizabeth Powers. They were together until her death in 1991.
Peter began his business career working as a florist at his brothers', Bill and Gene, shops. He later became a floral designer at the London Flower Shop, then the premier society flower shop in the city. For a time he owned his own shop, the Flower Box in Ardmore.
In the 1950's, with then 5 children at home, he began to sell fire and homeowners insurance door to door in the evenings, forming the Peter D. Carlino agency in Germantown, an agent for the Germantown Fire Insurance company. Noting that there was a title insurance policy generally present at a real estate closing, he formed the Germantown Title Insurance Company. In 1969 he acquired Penn Title Insurance Company, an underwriting company based in
Reading since 1929.
