RICHARD BERGER Obituary

BERGER

DR. RICHARD A. With his wife Donna at his side, Richard (Rich) Berger, professor emeritus at Temple University, Philadelphia, passed away in his sleep on May 22, 2014 in Fort Washington, PA.
Born March 24, 1927 in Chicago, IL, Rich joined the Marines at age 18 and served our country oversees before attending Michigan State. There he played for the legendary football coach Biggie Munn as a running back until he met and married his wife Donna Rose Munson of Saginaw, MI. Earning a Bachelor's and then a Master's Degree at MSU, Rich was already a nationally ranked weightlifter when he received his PhD from the University of Illinois in 1960. Upon graduation, Rich taught at the University of Illinois and then at Texas Tech where he earned a second Master's degree in Statistics and Research Analysis. Regarded as a pioneer of Strength Research, Rich is considered as one of the first men to apply modern testing procedures and statistical analysis to the question of sets and reps for strength training purposes. Rich taught at Temple from 1968 to his retirement in 1993, and his academic accomplish-ments included three books, and over 100 articles focusing on strength research and its application to sports training.
His passion for his field of academic study was witnessed in his personal life as well. He could often be seen competing on the handball court, weightlifting, or jogging the area near his home in Maple Glen, PA.
He is survived by his wife Donna of 65 years, his children Lorre, Mike, Monica, Terry, Mary, Francis, Andrea, Matt, 18 grandchildren and 5 great- grandchidren. A memorial service will be held 11 A.M. Saturday, June 14, 2014 at Chelten Church of Hope, 1601 Limekiln Pike, Dresher, PA 19025. In lieu of flowers, the family request contributions be made to your favorite missionary or charity.

I went to church with Rich and Donna in the early 90s. They were the most loving couple. I still think of them.

Dr. Berger's work was instrumental in stimulating me to pursue graduate work in exercise science and later physical therapy. I am so sorry for his loss, and for the fact I never had a chance to thank him personally.
