Russell GLICKSMAN Obituary

GLICKSMAN Russell Allen Of Gladwyne, PA, passed away peacefully on April 11, 2023, from complications of Fragile X-associated tremor/ataxia syndrome (FXTAS). He was at home with his family by his side. Russ was born on April 15, 1939, in New York City to Charlotte (Simons) Glicksman and Allen Glicksman, a renowned portrait artist and co-founder of the Mamaroneck Artists Guild in Westchester County. Russ moved to Larchmont, New York at an early age, and spent the duration of his childhood there. After graduating from Mamaroneck High School, he attended Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania, where he was a pitcher for the baseball team and earned a degree in psychology in 1961. From 1962-1965, he was an officer in the United States Navy, serving on the USS Hornet and reaching the rank of lieutenant (junior grade). Russ spent the majority of his career in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where he worked for 24 years at the Colonial Penn Group, serving as Executive Vice President of Operations. In 1989, he co-founded The Beam Group, an executive recruiting firm with offices in New York and Philadelphia, where he was President and CEO. During his career, Russ also served on the boards of the Greater Philadelphia YMCA, the Philadelphia College of Performing Arts and Philabundance. Throughout his life, Russ enjoyed splitting his time between Gladwyne and New York City. Russ was known for his passion for his family, traveling, golf and gardening, his wicked sense of humor and his fierce competitive spirit. Russ is survived by his wife, Andrea Utecht; his four children, Curtis Ryan (Kristin), Carrie Peterson (Jay Lien), Christopher Utecht (Poorvi Goel) and Alexandra Utecht (Michael Budzinski); his grandchildren, Charlie Lien, Sam Lien, Rosetta Ryan and Hannah Budzinski; his sister, Linda Kennedy (Michael); and several nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank his dedicated caregivers, Mary, Oumie and Rose, as well as his nurses, Zena and Eileen. The family will host a private celebration of Russ's life later this summer. I am sorry to learn of Russ's passing. I interacted with Russ several times during the course of my employment in the recruiting industry, and always appreciated Russ's directness, candor, and guidance. I didn't know him that well per se, but he was clearly a successful individual and a stand-up genuine guy. RIP Russ.

I had the privilege of working for Russ at Colonial Penn and kept in close touch with him long after we both left that organization. He was a true friend and confidant. I owe much to him and will miss his wit and humor. I learned so much from him. My condolences to Andrea and his family.

One category of relationship to the deceased that wasn't on the list -- great admirer. I would have chosen that one but 'friend' certainly describes what he was to Philabundance and to me particularly.
Russ brought so much to our board. His contribution -- especially on the Governance and Strategic Planning Committees -- was invaluable.
I have fond memories too of his friendship beyond business and philanthropy. We'd have lunch from time to time and I always looked forward to hearing his latest insights and world view. And his humorous take on many of those topics. Russ was a very dear and talented man and I know the family is cherishing a lifetime of memories. Andrea, I am so sorry for your loss.

My deepest sympathy and condolences go out to Russ´s entire family for the heartbreaking loss of such a wonderful man. In early 1970 I too was a new veteran from the Marine Corps and a Vietnam veteran looking to start a career. A recruiter sent me to interview with Russ for a marketing position at Colonial Penn. But Russ and I hit it off right away and he asked me to join his Personnel Department. For the next 20 years we worked together at Colonial Penn. Russ was an exceptional manager. He told me what he needed done, offered advice and never looked over my shoulder. We became close friends.
I will miss him so very much, and am eternally grateful to have had him as a part of my life for those many years.

Russ will be missed. He was so accomplished in his career and in rearing a family with Andrea. And, he was such a good and caring person as a friend and as a brother-in-law. Today, April 15, would have been his 84th birthday. I wish him Happy Birthday as he celebrates this next year in his new place.

Love, Kathy
