DEKKER

SARAH, beloved daughter of Lee Dekker and Deborah Pollak and sister of Nick Dekker and Maggie Dekker, died April 19 at her home in Mount Airy, Philadelphia. Sarah, who was born on Nov. 22, 1988, was 23. The cause of death was cancer. Sarah Dekker was an artist whose work received critical notice before her 2011 graduation from the University of Pennsylvania. She attended Project Learn School and Central High School, from which she graduated in 2007. Sarah, who loved to draw, was a printmaker. Her work was selected for an international juried exhibition at The Print Center in 2011. Sarah's etching of Lil Wayne was purchased by a curator at the Museum of Modern Art. A sampling of Sarah's work can be seen at www.sarahdekker.org. Sarah is survived also by her extended family, many friends and her cat, Carlos. An award to honor a Central High School artist, the Sarah Dekker Memorial Art Award, has been established. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made by check to Associated Alumni of Central High School (AACHS), designated for Sarah Dekker; mail c/o Katherine Morse at P.O. A Memorial Service for Sarah Dekker will be held at 11 A.M.. June 23 in the sculpture garden of Morris Arboretum, 100 E. Northwestern Ave. Philadelphia.

I only just heard this horrific news somehow. I feel crushed, and have no words, only wonder at how your are bearing up under this. I can only say how deeply, deeply saddened I am by this, and how much my heart goes out to you. I am glad Sarah will live on through the scholarship fund, as well as in so many hearts. i did not know sarah but after looking at seeing her work and the passion that embodied it, i feel like i do. i am the mother of blaise laramee, the receipent of the sarah dekker memorial award he received at the central high school graduation a few weeks ago. i have been looking for some way to say how truly thankful i am for this honor that my son received and hope that this note is seen by her family. the donation actually will help blaise tremendously with his college expenses to ursinus college. as a mother of four unique and artistic children (2 in the central art department and one at CAPA and hopefully the next to attend central as well) i just want to say i'm honored and humbled i am to have my son receive this in rememberance of sarah and her artistic spirit.
i'm really at a loss for words to say how thankful i am.
