Scott Goldstein Obituary

Goldstein Scott, MD Of Philadelphia, PA, Annapolis, Maryland, passed away on Thursday, February 15th, 2024, at the age of 72 following a brief illness. Scott was born on March 28, 1951, to Sam and Florence Goldstein. He grew up in Brooklyn, NY completing his early education at Brooklyn Technical High School followed by college education at the University of Pittsburgh. He received his medical degree at the University of Buffalo (SUNY). Scott completed his residency at Lenox Hill Hospital in NY leading to a colon and rectal surgery fellowship at Muhlenberg Hospital. He completed a distinguished career in colon and rectal surgery at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, retiring in July of 2022. Despite his intense dedication to his medical career, more than anything, Scott was a family man. He is survived by his beloved wife of 34 years, Joann (nee Bielitsky). With extreme pride, he relished in the academic and career successes of his four sons, Frank (Kyleigh), Samuel (Loreen), Jonathan (Haley), and Charles (Claudia). Perhaps his greatest source of joy was in his role of grandfather ("Gee") to Charleigh, Levi, and Jack. He was a beloved brother to Richard, and Joel (Melissa) and a loving uncle to his many nieces and nephews. It would be remiss not to include the countless patients, whose lives he impacted over the years, the friends whom he cherished, and his colleagues/co-workers whom he esteemed. Services at Mt. Hebron Cemetery, 130-04 Horace Harding Expressway, Queens, NY 11367, on Sunday, February 18th, 2024, at 2:00 P.M. Please omit flowers. Contributions in his memory may be sent to Department of Surgery at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, 1100 Walnut St., Philadelphia, PA 19107. Sol Levinson and Bros., Inc. Dr Goldstein was not just my surgeon but a compassionate and extraordinary person who I met at 18 years old. He is the reason I am here today. His care, kindness, and dedication will always hold a special place in my heart. I am deeply grateful for the profound impact he had on my life. My deepest condolences to his family and friends. Thank you, Dr Goldstein for everything you will be missed. Rest well

Dr. Goldstein has been my doctor, my husband's and my aunt's doctor, and over the years I realized he was a doctor for my hairdresser and quite a few friends. We would all say you've got to go to Dr. Goldstein. He's the best. The only one to go to. No one loves going for these procedures but as Dr. Goldstein's patients, we all raved about him. On a very personal note, he and Dr. Rose saved my Aunt's life when she somehow had developed a blockage to bloodflow to her stomach during chemo. There was Dr. Goldstein who came into her hospital room and figured that out when no one else could. She was back to herself in no time. If I was nervous when I would have a procedure with him, right before the anesthesia he would tell me a joke. I have repeated the last joke he told me 5 years ago to many. So funny and clean, you could tell it to a 5 year old. I have never met a doctor like him and I am so sad to hear of his passing. His family is in our prayers and has our heartfelt condolences. Prayers to all his patients who miss him too.

It was a sad news to learn of Scott´s passing. I´ve spent many days and hours working with him in the OR @ TJUH as a nurse in the colorectal team. He was an excellent surgeon and respectful to his surgical staff. My heartfelt condolences to his family. May he rest in Peace!

Scott and I met on those wonderful Jefferson ski trips. We spent much time together on chairlifts (where you can get to know someone pretty well), on skiing down runs that were far too long for me, Scott always waiting patiently, and at group dinners where I met the lovely Joann. Scott also had the privilege of doing an appendectomy on me after I had just been anticoagulated-confessing later to having been terrified about my bleeding out. He was a real friend, an exceptionally good and decent person, and, of course, an extremely accomplished surgeon. My deepest condolences to Joann and the entire family.

Dear Joann,
My friend and old neighbor growing up , Marlene remembers ur family esp. ur momma. She reads the obit. She came across this and said isn't this Sherrie's daughter husband .
I am so sorry to hear of this devastating loss . My mom and I were talking about u and your sisters recently wondering f how u all were doing .
My mom remembers when my dad , Walter Loev , would go to Scott for coloscopy and he would finish the procedure and say that you are so beautiful Walter . Scott had a dry sense of
Humor . My mom remembers babysitting for your four boys with ur momma at your house . What fun they had .
Now let me speak some spiritual wisdom . We are all made up of love and energy. Which are eternal . So love and energy never dies. Please look for signs from the other side from Scott. Signs are electrical lights flashing , clocks going or the time standing still . Birds appearing. Coins found at random. Dreams which are not dreams but true visitations . Believe this is all true . I personally have experienced most of this . In fact today my mom and I were talking how much my dad loved ur hubby and I found a dime . The coin my dad sends me from the other side . My dad acknowledged his feelings toward Scott .
Hope this helps . Fell free to call me if u want to talk . U prob have my mother's number .

I have known Scott for quite some time. I was a resident of his at TJUH and then a colleague when I was on staff. He was always a great mentor and role model. He provided education and mentorship for my entire career as a surgeon. I wish his family the best.

I worked with Dr Goldstein for many years in the OR and JSC. Many years ago I asked him to do Mom´s first colonoscopy, he found cancer and called me before telling her, as he knew my father had a heart condition. He was a gifted and compassionate surgeon and Mom lived to celebrate till 101! He also took care of my sister and family.
Scott was taken too soon, may his memory be for a blessing.

It broke my heart to see Dr. Goldstein had passed. He was always wonderful to work with when I worked in the endoscopy unit at Jefferson. He had a signature move us nurses would call "The Goldstein Push" when there was a difficult turn or colon and next thing you knew you were flying to the cecum. Sending love to all of the Goldstein family and his closest friends

Scott and I were friends for 50 years. I met him when we started medical school. As the decades passed we remained a part of each other´s lives. Our families loved each other.
We never argued. We were never angry. I could always depend on him for anything. I loved being with him under any circumstance. He was a very good man and I feel honored by having been his friend. His loss is profoundly painful. Life won´t be the same. My heart goes out to Joanne and the Goldstein family.

I never knew a time at Jefferson without Dr. Goldstein. I was his medical student, inspired, educated (and entertained) by his wit and constant curiosity about limitless topics in the endo suite and the OR. It was a privilege to train with him in residency. He was very committed to his patients. We always knew his family was his pride and joy - my deepest condolences to you all. I will never forget him telling me I had cancer. I asked him if we had to wait to see if the mass in my colon was cancerous from pathology. He never hesitated and said "no it´s cancer". My wife fell against the wall, and I felt a confidence. This man acted like it was nothing. He realized my wife was almost passing out, and then became compassionate for a second and told us that we cancer is a bad thing, but I was lucky to find my diagnosis so early and how he was going to treat it.
He was all business from that point on.
He was always to the point and waisted no time. He was an ultimate professional happy to see you at your follow ups for 2 minutes then straight to being a great doctor. That´s what gave me the confidence when he gave me my diagnosis. What a great man.

As one of Dr. Goldstein's fellows, I was saddened to hear of his passing. Dr. Goldstein was a remarkable mentor and friend. His teachings have been invaluable to me on both personal and professional levels. He had so many classic surgical sayings which I have repurposed many times. One of my all-time favorites is "The difference between you and me is when I cut I know when you cut you pray". My condolences to his family.
