Stan Baum was many things ... best among them, a good friend of mine. He was a renowned Interventional Radiologist, a great pioneer in that field. He was also a great Dept. Head of Radiology, at Penn Hospital.
I first came to know Stan and his family when he came to work at Mass. Gen. Hospital and luckily for my family, came to live next door to us for many years in Newton, MA. Our lives intertwined again in Philadelphia ... he was on the search committee that invited me to become Chief of Radiology at CHOP.. renewing an association that was
both personal and professional.
My wife Kristin and my children extend our most heartfelt condolences to Jean, Richie, Laura and Carol.
Stan and his family have been an important and valued
part of the Fellows' families journey.

I didn´t really know Dr Baum, not in the manner most of the submitted memories recite. Only had a brief glimpse. Knew of his pro achievements plus the personal attention he extended to me. Teenager forward, 35mm Canon carrier, photographer, hours in darkroom, affinity for images, 3rd year med student convinced Radiology was my destiny. Pre-match years. Applied and set to join Penn radiology. Early 4th year had a negative experience at MGH during what now would be called a sub-I (mia culpa). Turned away from Rad. I called Dr Baum, and informed him and Wally senior that I changed my mind. I was afraid and unsure, but with grace, compassion and professionalism he tempered my anxiety and helped me move forward during a time of uncertainty.

In Memory: Dr Stanley Baum was one of the most brilliant Radiologist that I knew, and I knew him well. As Chairman, he spent 4 years at the MGH and I knew his family well. He accidentally lived near us and we visited his home in Philadelphia many times including the time he installed an elevator in his huge Victorian Home. Professionally, he described an early finding in angiography. As a Chairman, he trained many superb Radiologists. He was very involved in professional organizations and was a leader in most of them. He received multiple metals for his professional excellence. We knew his family well and he will be greatly missed. He was an unusual person and well loved in all respects. Dr. Murray & Linda Janower

Our deepest condolences to Jeanne and the Baum and Masch families. Stanley´s contributions to the field of radiology are surpassed only by his role as beloved matriarch. May his memory be a blessing.

Dear Jeanne, Rich, and the entire Baum Family: Stan was a great IR pioneer and a wonderful man. You won't ever know how many individuals and careers were inspired by his work and his leadership. Trust me when I say there were many. Count me and my career among them. There was a time when I passed on an opportunity to work alongside Stan as his vice-chair at Penn--perhaps not the smartest thing I've ever done. But memories of him will always hold a special place with me. In sympathy, Gary J. Becker
