THOMAS LEICHNER Obituary

LEICHNER
THOMAS JOSEPH, JR., MD

Passed away peacefully at the Boca Raton Regional Hospital in Florida, on Monday, October 2nd, 2017. He was 77 years old. He was the loving and devoted husband of Dawn (nee Durning) for 54 years. Thomas was the beloved father of Thomas III (Gretchen), Missy (Foued), Gregory (Kari), and Jeffrey (Krista). He was also the proud grandfather of Ashley (Sean), Hayden, Sammy, Thomas IV, Camille, Ayrton, Zoe, Hagen, Dutch, and Finn. He is survived by his brother, Dr. John Leichner, and his sister, Bernice Leichner. Thomas was the son of the late Dr. Thomas Joseph Leichner, Sr. and Frances Bernice (nee Lembach).
He was a proud Philadelphia native who was educated at St. Joseph's Preparatory High School, St. Joseph's University, and Jefferson Medical School, where he also subsequently did his surgical internship and residency. Following this, Thomas performed general surgery duties as a major in the United States Air Force. After his service, Thomas worked as a family practice physician and as a general surgeon in Philadel-phia for over 32 years. After which, the Leichners retired to Kiawah Island, SC. Despite the move, he remained an avid Eagles and Phillies fan.

Dr Leichner was our family doctor since the 1970's until 1998. I named him my miracle doctor. He didn't have to run all these tests to figure out was was wrong with a patient. He listened and diagnosed. He would always say this is what is wrong but I will run some tests. Dr. Leichner was always right! He was compassionate. My parents had no money he would treat them for $2.00 a visit. No words can express my gratitude to him. When he retired it was a sad day for the medical community but a sadder day for my family. I could go on and on about the amazing man he was. RIP Dr. Leichner! You are truly missed!

I am saddened to have just heard of Dr. Leichners passing. He was my father Edward Lavin's physician as well as mine in Phila for many years. My father passed in 2005. Prior to his passing, he was bed strickened. Dr.Leichner made housecalls for my father, which was so appreciated because that is not a practice that physicians do today. I remember him coming over with his old school black medical bag. Im so grateful for the care he gave my father and myself Edward Lavin Jr. I remember also talking Philly sports with Dr. Leichner. He had a wonderful "bedside manner" as my dad called it. Prayers for him and his family.

I knew Thomas Leichner for many years. He was my physician and then I started To work for him. He was compassionate, truly caring, loved his family to the moon and back. He did house calls, payment could of been cookies but he never complained. When I discussed wanting to become a nurse he gave me great encouragement. My fear was my age 40. No kitten. Well I did go forth and become a nurse. That was one of the best choices I ever made and to this day I thank Tom for his encouragement. May he get some rest and may the angels wrap, their arms around him and protect him. Until we meet again, may god bless you and Thanks for all you done for our country and all patients lives you saved. You were the best. Until we meet again RiP. Loved you great man. Peggy

I have a habit of reading the obits to see if anyone I knew over the years has passed away, sadly today I recognized a name. I knew Dr. Leichner slightly when he was a student at Jefferson. Even though it was a lifetime ago, I still remember his kindness and down to earth personality. He was engaged to the future Mrs. Leichner (Dawn)at the time but the wedding was coming up. I wanted to present the couple with a little something so this naïve girl picked out some ashtrays or coasters, sorry I forget, think maybe Lenox. It was nice to have someone befriend me in what were sometimes trying and difficult times at Jefferson. Sincere condolences to the family.

My heartfelt sympathies go out to the family and friends during this difficult time. I hope that the promise in 1 Thessalonians 4:14 can bring comfort. Knowing that there is a hope for the ones we have lost in death can be so reassuring.
