WILLIAM DeLONG Obituary

DeLONG
WILLIAM G. JR. M.D.

Leader in Orthopaedic Surgery, Trauma and Sports Medicine, Dies at 71. William G. DeLong Jr., M.D., an accomplished orthopaedic surgeon, Network Chairman of Orthopaedic Surgery at St. Luke's University Health Network, former team physician for the Philadelphia Flyers, and widely respected doctor both nationally and internationally died from a sudden heart attack on Friday in Camden, NJ. He was 71. He leaves his wife (Ginny) of 48 years, son Christian, daughter Lauren (Greg Ng) and grandson Joel Opdenhoff. Sisters Rosemary Duffy (William), Theresa Ackerman (Bruce) and Brother in Law Frederick Decker. His nephew Daniel Ackerman (Christina). Nieces Jennifer Duffy, Julia Higgins (Tim), Sarah Becker (Matt), Bonnie Baab, Lisa Dowd (Mike), Emma Ackerman and of course his faithful four legged companion Stella. Dr. DeLong trained countless surgeons and was a genuine leader whose most recent position as Chairman at St. Luke's oversaw the rapid growth and development of a community program into a large network of academic specialists. Always leading by example, he continued to take overnight trauma call responsibilities and maintained full surgical and clinic schedules up until his passing. He never turned a patient away, never said no to a colleague in need, and generously mentored countless new surgeons. His contributions continue to benefit patients and doctors around the world. Bill was a lifelong Philadelphia and South Jersey resident - born, raised and educated in the Philadelphia area. An avid fan of all Philadelphia sports teams, it was hard to pull him away from any game. As an athlete himself he participated in triathlons and was very active in both personal competition and support of athletic endeavors at all levels. (cont.)

Dr. DeLong treated my knee after I had suffered an injury that required surgery in Mykonos , Greece in 9/15/2000. He came highly recommended when I asked for a the best sport medicine doctor at BBB. My follow up was in Haddonfield, he reviewed and noted I had received excellent care abroad. No further surgery needed. He was the best doctor indeed to address my concerns for a return to work and a return to sports. Thankful and blessed to have known him. A kind and caring man. Just learned of his passing as I looked him up today. Heartfelt condolences to his family. One of the best physicians I have ever known.

To all who have shared their memories of Bill, my family and I are truly grateful. Some of you I know, and others I do not know, but please know that your kind words are very much appreciated more than I can express.

Bill in the Temple Chem Lab in 1968. It was in that year that we learned that both of us were in Drum and Bugle Corps; Bill was a snare drummer in the Blue Rocks and I played a bugle in the Bracken Cavaliers.

Still miss you buddy.

I first met Bill in Medical School. he was next to me in the alphabet. We were lab partners in anatomy and good friends all through school. Our paths separated after we graduated, but when my mother had a back problem Bill was the doctor I wanted her to see.

Bill was a great person and is the only one I knew that had the match select his specialty. Bill liked all aspects of medicine, but he wanted to stay in Philadelphia for his residency. So when it was time to put in his match choices, he selected the hospitals he wanted to train in and then applied for Surgery, Medicine and Ob Gyn to those hospitals.

Bill and I went to interview for surgery at Penn together and at that interview is when he found out about Penn’s Ortho program. Bill was taking an Orthopedic Rotation at the time and true to form Bill liked Orthopedics too. So he deiced to add Orthopedics at Penn to his match list. It was no surprise that Bill was one of 2 people that was selected for the special program in Orthopedics at Penn.

I have many fond memories of our time together in medical school. Although, Bill has left us for now I am comforted by the fact that God had room in Heaven for him now and it is only a matter of time before we will meet again.

Ginny: My deepest sympathies to you and your family and we will all keep Bill in our prayers.

Classmates at Temple Med, we sat together at our 40th two years ago, and I enjoyed meeting Ginny and catching up on our lives since 1978. He cheerfully remarked that he was training for or had completed, a triathlon that he did with his daughter, and and still took ER and hospital call in addition to busy office and surgery schedules! I remain amazed at his energetic commitment to medicine, his patients, and teaching. While most of us are retired or reducing clinical responsibilities, he was enthusiastically working more than full time and looking for ways to innovate and further improve medical care. Such a loss to so many people and institutions he served. My condolences to his family.

April 3, 2020

I am truly saddened by this news. Doctor William DeLong put me back together in 2002 after a motorcycle accident and I still dont know how he did it. I thought I wouldnt live and when I did, I thought I wouldnt keep my leg, and when I did I thought Id never walk again but I did. It took a lot of surgeries and stainless steel but I never gave up and neither did he. On one of my many operations we couldnt get a sitter so we called the kids out of school and brought them along. Zach and Dr. DeLong talked about Mercedes and Jaguars most of the time. Diane and I postponed our wedding when I got hurt because I now had four 12 spikes, two in the shin and two through the foot, and snap on sweat pants, no shoe and in a wheelchair is not how either of us wanted to remember our wedding day. After about a year he made the plans to remove them and said lets get you two hitched.Diane and I were baptized and married in 2004. I went to see him every year since for a checkup and X Rays to inspect the hardware. Whoever his fellow was at the time, and there were many over the years, would say that he was very busy so dont keep him talking but as soon as Dr. DeLong came in hed say hows the kids and his fellow knew he wasnt getting out of there anytime soon. Wed talk about our kids, his kids, kids getting tattoos and vacations that we spent abroad and the ones he spent on a tiny island in New Jersey. And Im sure this is only one story of many in the countless lives this man has touched with his caring and goodness. I read this news in a sympathy letter sent to me from St. Lukes Hospital and as sad as I feel Im grateful for getting to know him and thankful to God for putting him in my life at exactly the right moment. I know he will be lovingly taken care of forever in Gods arms. He was much more than a Doctor to me; he was a good man, a good friend and my miracle. Its with my deepest and heartfelt sympathy to his wife and children that I say Im so sorry for your loss. Godspeed my friend

Just received notification from St. Luke's in Bethlehem about Dr. Delong's passing. So very sorry and sad. This world needs good people, good men, and its upsetting when the good ones leave too soon. So sorry. Mike H. hip replacement patient.

Dear Ginny, Christian, Lauren, Greg and Joel,
It's so hard to write about the death of a beloved brother. I still can't comprehend it. All the great memories have come flooding back. Christmas mornings, Bill's Confirmation, when the Bishop pulled him out of the pew and said here son, hold my Crozior, I'm tired. The summers in Atlantic City playing in the sand and body surfing in the ocean and in the evening walking the boardwalk and going on the rides together. He loved the bumper cars. We would play board games and stick ball and Halfsies and Redlight- Greenlight. I remember the big family weddings we always had each other to dance with and the fun times we had at Cedar Lake. He was such fun, kind and loving and generous. I texted him the month before he died to ask about a friend who was having trouble after knee surgery. He responded immediately with the right answer to solve her problem. I always made sure that when we spoke or texted that I ended by saying, I love you. I never thought that text would be my last. Again, I will say I love you Bill.

Our very deepest condolences to Ginny and the entire Delong family. You touched our lives in so very ways. When I first arrived in South Jersey to start my career in Cardiac surgery, Bill was kind enough to take me aside and describe the lay of the land before me. He encouraged our family to move to his family's town of Haddonfield and went so far as to research the home that we eventually purchased. His family continued to touch our lives as we went through the public school and little league program - their steadying influence felt by us through their leadership in the school and a variety of community boards. In time, one of our daughters came under his care for a wrist problem - she has gone on to play college and professional tennis. The lives of good people will always be felt. You are the best and we will miss you.

We are very sad to learn about Williams death. My wife worked with him on a daily basis and he was truly a dear friend to her. He impressed the importance of family and work life balance during our interactions . Our conversations about law enforcement families and his life as a youth of a Philly Police Officer left an eternal impression on our LE family. He had a passion for work and the people he worked with. He will truly be missed by everyone who he had contact with. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Dr DeLong gave me my first job as a receptionist in the Orthopaedic Department at Cooper. I learned so much from him. I can remember one time he asked me to do something and I did it but I didnt follow up with him. He told me if I give you something to do you make sure YOU follow up on it. I have lived by that all my life. He was such a kind and caring person. A great surgeon. He will be missed.

I was a broken and critically injured patient. Waiting to put me back together was Dr Delong. His compassion, consummate skill and personal interaction with me, pulled me out of the depths and allowed me to continue on with a productive and rich life. Were it not for Bill, I have no doubt the end results would have been vastly different. For the last 20 years I have had the privilege of being a successfully remade part(s) of this giant's lifeworks. I am indebted to him and shall for ever, remain so. My deepest sympathies and thoughts go to his family and the many he has touched.

Ginny, my heart goes out to you and your family. The world has lost one the few truly good people.

I've known Billy since I was a kid and he was always so nice and kind and so funny. He always made the same face as Poppy when he cracked a joke, which was most of the time, with that big grin and raised eyebrows waiting for you to get the joke. I remember his Saturday cartoons, mayonaise sandwiches during the night when he'd come through to tease me and Theresa about our Michael Jackson records, and gave me the nickname "Jackson" which lasted a looong time. On Thanksgiving he was the best turkey carver anyone could have....his surgical training paid off!

He was the kindest person I had the honor to know, he helped me, and Jackie when she was injured in gym. She knew it would be ok with Uncle Billy taking care of her. And he totally impressed the kids when he knew who "Large Marge" was. He was always Uncle Billy to my kids, they still refer to him as that. And they are also heartbroken. I'm thankful we had a chance to be a part of the extended family and got to know him. We all send our love to your family.

I would love to go to his viewing but I have a repertory problem and don't want to put myself or other people at risk.

Dr. DeLong bucked the trend of doctors spending little time with patients. He would sit, chat, and listen to his patients, thus creating a strong doctor-patient relationship. I'll miss my visits and our chats about the Flyers and OCNJ.

I had the pleasure of observing Dr. DeLong in the OR when I was in school. He was so upbeat, kind, and level headed. My sincerest condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues

Dr.Delong is honestly the most amazing doctor. After my accident, I woke up to a man who was so kind and compassionate, I knew I was blessed that he was the surgeon on call that night. My Favorite Memory of Bill is when I learned he was planning on leaving Drum Corps to begin his schooling to become a Doctor. I actually went to him (as if I could talk him out of it) and begged him not to leave our Drum Corps Family. We had remained friends thru the years and he even gave me some much needed advise not so long ago that was very beneficial to me. I was so glad that he followed his Dreams and was so successful in his entire life with so many accomplishments! He will surely be missed and his friendship and Memory treasured Forever!
