William Roberts Obituary

Roberts William Renowned architect and visionary landscape designer, William (Bill) Roberts, passed away peacefully in his sleep on August 19, 2023, at the age of 90. Born on December 9, 1932, in Llandrinio Llanymynech, Wales, UK, Bill was the beloved son of Henry Wynne Roberts and Lena Jane Roberts. He is survived by his devoted wife of 64 years, Jean Mary Roberts, and their sons, Huw and Richard. Bill's journey began on a Welsh farm, fostering a deep love for nature and a strong work ethic. In 1959, he and wife Jean moved to the United States, where Bill earned a master's in landscape architecture at the University of Pennsylvania, eventually becoming chair of the Department of Landscape Architecture there. In 1963, Bill co-founded the esteemed firm, Wallace, McHarg, Roberts, and Todd (now WRT), pioneering sustainable design principles. Under his leadership, WRT left an indelible mark on the field, contributing to projects worldwide, including the U.S. Capitol, Baltimore Inner Harbor, and Amelia Island. Bill and Jean thrived in Philadelphia's Chestnut Hill, where he was active in the Philadelphia Cricket Club and enjoyed painting watercolors. Bill was recognized as a Distinguished Welsh-American by the Welsh Society of Philadelphia, where he enjoyed singing. As a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Bill will be deeply missed. A private family ceremony honored his passing.

I have just gained this very sad news via the modern grapevine and send much love with joyful memories to Jean and family of Bill and Penn Landscape Architect colleague, the late John M.Whalley, and me, his wife Gillian, staying with you both at your lovely home.
They´ll be `two live ones´ up there, won´t they Jean, remembering that cheeky comment from a welcoming restaurant attendant as they lagged behind the two of us!
