Paul Broward Obituary

Paul Henry Broward passed away at his home on March 8, 2024. He was born January 28,1930 in Lennox, CA (Los Angeles County). Paul was a standout athlete at Downey High, playing football, basketball, and track and field. During his senior year he was a member of Downey's title-winning CIF football team.
After graduating from high school Paul worked several different jobs, starting at Studebaker working on auto bodies as a "hand-sander," a lumbermill hand in Northern CA, a trucker for Mayflower Moving Company, and a lineman for General Telephone.
He married Patricia A. Gunter on December 3, 1949, and his first son Kurtis Jackson followed in December of 1951. At this time, Paul enlisted in the Marine Corp Reserves in solidarity with his two younger brothers who were serving as Marines in the Korean conflict. Two more children, Steven and Paula, were born rounding out Pat and Paul's family to five. In 1965 the family moved to Bishop from southern California. Pat and Paul loved the Owens Valley and were eager to raise their young family in Bishop, a special place to both. Paul continued his career with Continental Telephone becoming a supervisor who managed the installation and maintenance of telephone infrastructure throughout Inyo and Mono counties. He retired in 1988.
After retirement Paul used his carpentry and electrical skills to build numerous houses and room additions. He joined with his brother Ron to build one of the first microbreweries, Sudwerks, in California, taking after the family's German heritage. Pat and Paul traveled to Europe researching family history and to Korea with Ron, who was a member of JPAC (Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command), in search of soldiers lost during the Korean War.
One of Paul's favorite hobbies was playing the trumpet, he loved music and was a member of the Bishop Community Band playing at the city park during the summer months. Up to the ripe age of 81 he enjoyed cutting firewood for his wood stove. Both Pat and Paul were animal lovers and adopted many cats and dogs (among other creatures) over the years.
Paul was a man of resilience and independence, in the words of a longtime friend and neighbor: "Your folks were great neighbors and friends. We all grew up poor and would reflect on the challenges we faced as kids. We knew the value of friendship and the need to look out for one another. Your Dad lived life on his terms, even to the very end. We will miss him."
He was predeceased by his son Kurtis in 1993, brother Ronald in 2013, and wife Patricia in 2019. He is survived by his children Steven (Ann Marie) and Paula (Bob), his grandchildren Kevin and Sara Jo (Justin), and brother Alfred (Donna), along with numerous nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held at East Line St. Cemetery on Friday, April 19, at 11:00. Informal gathering to follow.

I worked with Paul for over 30 years at the telephone company. He was a very good man and co-worker. He had strong morals and an exemplary work ethic.
His loyalty to his loved ones, and his friends was without question.
He and Pat were a wonderful couple, delightful to be with.
I enjoyed my association with them both.
He has left a loving and strong legacy for his children and grandchildren.
I´m honored to have known him. May you rest in peace, my friend.
