Gary Obey Obituary

Gary Lewis Obey, age 77, of Hale, finished his mission on earth and was promoted into the arms of Jesus on Dec. 8, 2020, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born in Bay City on March 10, 1943 to the late Lewis and Berneice (Davis) Obey. He graduated from Bay City Central High School in 1961. In 1963 he started his career with General Motors, working the first three years in the Flint foundry. In 1966 he moved to Bay City Powertrain until retirement to Hale in 1995.
Gary was an outdoorsman, loving everything about nature and God's beauty. He was an active volunteer at the Hale Area FISH store since it was started in 1996.
On Oct. 2, 1965, he married the love of his life, Barbara Kay (Philo), who survives him. Their love for each other and for their family set an example of true love for generations to come. Together they raised three children who also survive him, Margaret (Kevin) Hintz of Midland, Mark (Kim) Obey of Hale and Melinda (James) Olvera of Gwinn. With 12 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren, life was never dull. His greatest times were spent around them all. He taught them the true meaning of LOVE and instilled in them a strong faith in God.
Surviving siblings include brother, Guy Obey of Bay City, and sisters, Mary (Fred) Maxson of Bay City and Anne (Bob) Dallaire of Grosse Pointe Woods; sisters-in-law, Cathie McCammon of Sanford, Jolee Reder of Sanford and Robin (Bob) Christiansen of Iola, Wis.; along with many special nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents; his sister-in-law, Barbara Mary Obey; and special niece, Bethany Jo Reder.
A celebration of Gary's life will take place on Thursday, Dec. 17, at noon, at Hale United Methodist Church, 201 W. Main Street, Hale. The family will greet guests from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Masks will be mandatory.
As a result of family allergies with flowers, the family respectively requests a donation to Hale Area Fish to be applied toward a memorial bench in lieu of flowers.

This is sad...Gary and I worked together in our early years as gas station attendants...and lost contact over the years. He was a fine guy..wry sense of humor..and honest as the day is long. I'm proud to say I knew him. RIP Gary..and God Speed!
