I read Helen Taylor's obituary in Sunday's paper. It brought back a specific memory from a long time ago: The summer of 1969, to be exact. The Taylor's owned a very tiny movie theater in the little town of Hale, Michigan. It was only open in the summer for those who came “Up North” to spend the summers at their cabins on one of the many lakes in the area. I was lucky enough to get a job with them, running the little concession stand. For the summer, I was queen of fresh popcorn, chocolate bars and soda pop for all those who came to watch movies well past their opening runs.
As it got nearer to July 20th, I asked the Taylor's if they would mind if I brought into work a small black & white TV. They agreed. It was not easy finding a place to fit it into my little closeted space, and we really weren't even certain I would get a signal.
On July 20, 1969, while the movie was playing for the tourists, and in between interruptions for bags of popcorn and candy bars, I was able to watch the landing of Apollo 11 on the moon. And some hours later, I was able to watch the first step onto the moon.
Mrs. Taylor: Many thanks to you and your husband for encouraging a young person to experience this piece of magic.

Mrs. Taylor has long been considered the "Queen of Bass Lake". I don't remember her ever not being there. Rest in Peace!
