John Howell Obituary

John (Jack) C. Howell left this earth on Monday, May 3, 2010, at the young age of 67.
John was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on March 22, 1943. John spent six years in the Air Force and then went on to work for San Francisco State University. While in California, John was extremely involved with AA, helping start local chapters and helping literally hundreds of people with their addictions.
He was a very generous and nurturing individual, who genuinely cared about others. John moved to Michigan and became employed with the U.S. Forest Service, where he worked for over 10 years. His job put him where he loved to be, in the woods surrounded by nature. He loved to be outdoors and was known as a compulsive shutterbug, taking thousands of pictures of nature. John was also known for his sense of humor and quick wit. He spoke softly with an even softer heart.
John is survived by his loving wife and best friend, Bonnie; his stepsons, Brian (Beth) Baker, Scott (Erikia) Baker and Mike Baker; and his grandchildren, Kurtis Morin, Alex, Miranda, Seth and Ashley Baker. He is also survived by his brothers, Mike (Shar) and Andy; and a sister, Ann Rowe. He was preceded in death by his parents, Chester and Virginia Howell.
John was a true treasure, who will be sorely missed by his family, his many friends and coworkers at the Forest Service.
A celebration of John's life in the way of a memorial service will take place at a later date to be announced.

Dear Bonnie and Family,
I am so sorry to learn of your loss. Jack was a favorite cousin to pal around with when I visited Michigan as a pre teen. I pray that he is watching, guiding and bringing consolation to you as one of the Heavenly Father's newest angels.

This obituary for Jack fit him perfectly in my opinion. I got to know Jack pretty well when I lived in San Francisco. I have a couple of photos of him if anyone would like copies. I stopped by to see Jack quite often while I was working on my MFA at SF State. He even attended my wedding to Martin, who remembers Jack well and is saddened by this sudden loss. Our hearts go out to Jack's wife and to my cousins. It's sadder still to be brought together only by such a loss.
Your cousin,
