John A. Thompson, age 84, of National City, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by family on Oct. 18, 2025.
John was born in Ontonagon to the late Earl and Helen Thompson on Jan. 26, 1941. He spent his childhood in Ontonagon, and then moved to Flint in 1956.
Following his high school graduation, John enlisted into the United States Army where he proudly served our country from 1962-1965. He was stationed in Fort Gordon, Ga., and served as a Radio Signal Core Instructor. He was awarded a Sharpshooter Award and Good Service Conduct Medal before he was honorably discharged.
Following the service, John attended DeVry Technical Institute where he obtained a certificate in Radio Engineering. He then entered the workplace as a radio engineer for the City of Flint and spent 26 hardworking years with them until his retirement in 1988.
On Nov. 3, 1973, he married the love of his life, Linda Flemington. The two of them had the opportunity to spend 49 amazing years together, raising a family of two children. John was a proud member of the Flint Corvette Club, and he really enjoyed the friendships and memories he made with everyone that was a part of the group.
He also enjoyed woodcarving, listening to HAM Radio daily, being in nature, and spending quality time with his family and friends. In 1996, John and Linda relocated to National City, where they spent the remainder of their lives.
