Joseph "Joe" Allen Duby, age 70, a local resident of Oscoda, died on Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2022 in Brooksville, Fla.
Joe was born the son of Ralph and Patricia (Cody) Duby on Sept. 7, 1952 in Tawas City. Joe graduated from Oscoda High School Class of 1970 and continued his education at Alpena Community College.
Joe proudly served our country in the United States Air Force from 1971 to 1975 during the Vietnam War. During his working career, Joe managed 3C Vending Company for many years. He later ventured out as an entrepreneur and started his own successful company in Oscoda called Diligent Alarm Systems. He continued to operate his alarm system company for 35 years until his passing. Joe also was co-owner, along with his good friend, John Pulda, of JJ Amusements in Oscoda from 1990 until 2010.
Joe was a true supporter of the Oscoda community in many ways. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 274, the Oscoda VFW, and the Oscoda Eagles. Throughout his volunteer service with the American Legion, Joe had the distinguished honor and privilege of the only member to have ever served as the Commander for three terms. He also upheld the responsibilities as the District Vice-Commander for two terms, District Commander for two terms, and the District Financial Officer for numerous years.
Joe was an extremely dedicated member of the local Color Guard and the Sons of the American Legion. He always enjoyed being a part of the local parades and marching with his fellow comrades from the Legion and VFW.
Joe absolutely loved children and the joy they bring into the world with their wonder and smiles. He had many years of cherishing this love as he read "T'was the Night Before Christmas" at the yearly American Legion Kid's Christmas Party. With a passion for seeing the youth of the Oscoda community grow, he was one of the co-founders of the Oscoda Colts Youth Football Program.
Joe really enjoyed spending time on the water, especially boating with his family and friends. He was musically gifted, and for many years was a member of a local band in Central City, Colo., primarily playing the lead guitar. Some of Joe's favorite music artists that he listened to frequently were John Prine, Leonard Cohen, and John Denver.
Above all and most importantly, Joe loved his children and adored his grandchildren! Joe left a legacy in this world and our local community that will be forever recognized with love and pride.
He is survived by his first wife, special friend, and mother of his two daughters, Claudia Schiller. He later married Dallas Duby, and together they brought two sons into the world and shared 35 beautiful years of marriage until Dallas' passing in 2016. Joe is also survived by his current wife, Genien Duby, to whom he married in September of 2022. The three months together in marriage may have been short, but the couple were so happy and in love.
Leaving to carry on Joe's legacy are his children, Tera (Clay) Albert, Erin Duby (Mikey Baldwin), Kyle Duby and RD (Ashley) Duby; step children, Casey Nietiling, Skyla Krcmarik and Jake Krcmarik; sisters, Peggy (John) Gilbert and Penny Mills; grandchildren, Megan (Cutler) Olsen, Courtney (Jonny) Martin, Rhianna Albert (Kyle McCausley), Landin "Blue" Duby, Riley Duby, Myera Holberton, Lavender Duby, Lindsey Duby and Charley Duby; great grandchildren, Troy Martin, Cleo Olsen and Madden McCausey; and one step grandchild Gabriella Nietiling; many nieces, nephews, and very special friends.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Patricia Duby; wife, Dallas; and sister, Pamela Duby.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date at the American Legion Post 274 in Oscoda. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sons of the American Legion in Oscoda. Condolences may be shared at
