Vern Long Obituary

Vern C. Long Jr. of Tawas City passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, at the age of 60. He was surrounded by his heartbroken family and supported by the compassionate comfort care team at Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit.
Vern was born at Wurtsmith Air Force Base in Oscoda to Vern Sr. and Charlotte (Hosner) Long. He graduated with the class of 1983 from Tawas Area High School. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1984. That December, he married the love of his life, Jennifer (Wojahn), and together they raised two children.
After Vern was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1990, he began a career as a mid-shipman on the Great Lakes Freighters. As a wrestling coach in Tawas, Vern played a key role in shaping the lives of many local youth through his positive influence and guidance. Later in life, he found fulfillment in his job at the DPW in Tawas City where he had worked for the past 10 years.
As an avid outdoorsman, Vern had a deep love for hunting, fishing, and foraging. He spent countless hours hiking through the woods with his black lab, Gunner, and took joy in helping Jennifer care for her vegetable gardens. He was especially adept at locating and harvesting delectable wild blueberries! Vern also enjoyed cooking and sharing his creations with others. His fish fondue was a staple at family get-togethers and his carrot cake will always be remembered.
Vern is survived by his beloved wife of 40 years, Jennifer; children, Sarah (Greg) Segrest of Tawas City and Benjamin of Tawas City; father, Vern Sr. of Tawas City; two sisters, Lori (Danny) Klatt of Tawas City, Brandy Berry and of Texas; grandchildren, Garrett and Maggie; brothers and sisters-in-law; many nieces, nephews and cousins; and two special friends, Kevin Rogers and Burt Shay. Vern was preceded in death by his mother, Charlotte Long.
Per Vern's wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service is scheduled for Friday, April 25 at Buresh Funeral Home at 11 a.m. The family will welcome friends that morning from 9 a.m. until the time of the service. Immediately following the service, a luncheon will be served at the American Legion Hall at 124 Lincoln Street, East Tawas.
