Daniel Roper Obituary

Daniel C. Roper, III, a former executive with IBM and former Information Services Officer for Anne Arundel County, MD and Prince George's County, MD, died August 23 at the Medical University of SC in Charleston, SC. He was born at West Point, NY, on July 9, 1934, the son of MG and Mrs. Harry Roper and grandson of Daniel C. Roper, Secretary of Commerce under Franklin Roosevelt. He was educated at the USMA, at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY, and at the University of Southern California, from which he received a MS in Systems Management. Mr. Roper served three years as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division of the US Army and then had a long and distinguished career in Information Technology in both the public and private sectors. During his final illness he continued promoting environmental programs and supporting our troops overseas. An avid sailor, Mr. Roper raced to Bermuda and to Ensenada, Mexico, as well as cruising to Hawaii and all along the East Coast. A man of great integrity, compassion and charisma, he inspired respect and affection in those whose lives he touched. His large extended family includes his wife Marilyn, his children Mary Kay, John, Bruce, Bonnie, Patti, and Allison, his son-in-law Courtlandt; his brother and sister-in-law BG and Mrs Harry Roper, Jr., eighteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Services will be at 10 am on August 31 at All Saints Episcopal Church on Hilton Head Island, SC, where he is a member, and burial will be at Beaufort National Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Organ Fund at the church or to St. John's College, Annapolis, MD and Santa Fe, NM. The Island Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.

Dan was the "Best Man" for my wedding in 1957, on the "Bride and Groom" TV program. He was my class mate in OCS in Ft. Benning, GA., a fellow Paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne and a small plane partner/pilot back in the mid 50's. It seems like he was always in my life, and always a gentle and kind friend, and a friend to the end. We loved him and we will miss him. Our hearts go out to Marilyn and all the family. He was indeed, a special person.

To Marilyn and Allison and all your family,
I remember Dan as this gently smiling warm presence as your lives swirled busily around him. May you find peace in the quiet pride he took in all of you, and the beauty around you.

I, too, worked for Dan when he was Division Chief of IT in Prince George's County, MD. He was a great and understanding person during my transition into this realm and I thank God for the opportunity to know him. I know, as his family, you will miss him tremendously, but the Lord will keep him safe until you meet again. Best wishes to all.
