David J. Torpey, Jr., MD David J. Torpey, Jr., MD, age 87, of Bluffton, SC died Friday, February 23, 2018, at home in Bluffton. Dr. Torpey was born on November 9, 1930 in Philadelphia, PA, the son of the late Helen and David Torpey, Sr. He was a graduate of Saint Joseph's University and La Salle University, ultimately earning his Doctorate from Temple University in 1960. He was a veteran of the United States Navy where he served as a doctor along with the United States Fleet Marine Forces in Vietnam. In 1968 he honorably completed his military tenure as a Lieutenant Commander and accepted the position of Professor of Clinical Anesthesiology at the University of Pittsburgh-School of Medicine. He later held the position of Director of Anesthesiology at Allegheny General Hospital. Dr. Torpey is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Joan Louise Torpey; sons, David J. Torpey, III (Karen) and Mark Torpey; and grandchildren, Brendan, Christopher, and Jessica. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, March 10, 2018, at Saint Gregory the Great Catholic Church, 31 St. Gregory Drive, Bluffton, SC 29909.
