Dr. Torpey was the chairman of Anesthesiology during my training. He was always a delight to work with during cardiac cases. Dr. Torpey had high expectations of his anesthesiology residents and pushed us to study hard preparing for our future careers in medicine. He stood strong with us whenever we were challenged by other specialties. He was a wonderful mentor to me in my anesthesiology residency. A soft spoken man most of the time. I remember his love of military service and the Marines....

David J. Torpey, Jr was the greatest mentor of my professional career. He was a physician leader distinguished by his compassion, integrity, intellect, and tireless work ethic. His contributions to the field of cardiac anesthesiology will live on forever through the many students, residents, fellows, CNRAs, and peer physicians who benefitted from his teaching and example. I will also remember David as a friend and avid fellow skier. DJT was more than just a mentor and friend, he was truly...

Dr. Torpey was my chairman at AGH for a large portion of my anesthesiology career. He was a mentor and model for all of us in a challenging work environment. About a generation younger than Dave, even today for me, he serves as a model of graceful aging, an even more difficult lesson which he offered and which I try to emulate.

Dr. Torpey was truly a lifelong learner and passionate about living life to its fullest. We'll never forget his memorable courses in our Osher Lifelong Learning Institute program and his personal stories that made us think deeper, laugh and share in our human-ness. Wishing his family peace, comfort and the warmth of loving memories.

Dave, as my chairman, had a huge, continual positive influence on me during my 24 years at AGH. As I said to him in 1978, I would not work at AGH if he was not there. I never forgot his words (that I agreed with for myself) "I may not be smarter than the other doctors, but, I can work harder". He certainly had a great positive influence in my life. He will be missed. RDM

Dr. David J. Torpey, Jr was my mentor, teacher, role model, and colleague through out both my training and education and my academic career. One of my cherished photographs shows David (the Professor) and me (the resident) providing anesthesia care to the Professor of Cardiology.

I have always saluted him as playing a critical part in my training and education. He and Joan kindly looked after Sandy and I during my training and occasionally took us to dinner.
