Donald Ferguson Obituary

Donald R. Ferguson Donald R. Ferguson passed away on Sunday, July 10, 2018, at Hilton Head Hospital. A resident of the Cypress, he is survived by Margaret, his wife of 61 years, son Scott (Meg) and daughter Leslie. He was born in Hackensack NJ, to the late Thelma Taylor and James Gordon Ferguson of Rutherford, NJ. He studied forestry for a year at Syracuse University and transferred to Penn State to earn a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. He was a member of Phi Gamma Delta, serving as treasurer. He and Margaret met between their junior and senior years at Penn State, walking the aisle as bridesmaid and usher in the wedding of a fraternity brother and sorority sister. They were married a year later after graduating. Donald worked briefly for Bell of New England before entering Naval Officers Training School in Newport, RI. Graduating as an ensign, he was briefly assigned to the Naval annex near the Pentagon, and then to the USS San Joaquin County, LST 1122, home ported in San Diego. Cruises took the ship to the western Pacific, and finally to home port in Iwakuni, Japan, where the couple lived for a year and a half. A long career followed with Bell of Pennsylvania in engineering and management in the Philadelphia area. His years with Bell included training at Bell Labs, Holmdel, NJ, at Lisle, Illinois, and at Dartmouth College. ln 1996 the Fergusons left the snowy north to live at Moss Creek for 18 years, where Don enjoyed bridge, a lot of golf, and many good friends. Moss Creek didn't even have a traffic light then. In 2014 they moved to the Cypress, where he continued making good friends and enjoying the comfortable lifestyle. No services are planned.

Margie & family,
I first knew Don in Pierrepont elementary school in Rutherford, way back when, then through R.H.S. I remember him as a nice kid and a good man. He will be missed by many. Gus and I send you our condolences.

Dear Margie,
Harry and I extend our condolences to you, Leslie and Scott. Ferg was a dear friend for over 50 years, and we always enjoyed socializing with the two of you at the many dinner parties, the cook outs or Penn State foot ball games whether it was the actual games or our group gathering to watch on TV.
He was a gentleman, a devoted family man and a good friend.
Our deepest sympathy,
Gwen and Harry

Don was a gentleman and good friend. He loved Moss Creek and told me that every time I saw him. He will be missed by all.
