Doris Johnson Gray Doris Johnson Gray, 86 of Beaufort and widow of James Marion Gray, Sr. died Friday, November 4, 2016 at The Wayne T. Patrick Hospice House in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Doris was born on September 10, 1930 in Mullins, South Carolina. She was the daughter of the late Gilbert Allen Johnson, Sr. and Carlotta Wolff Johnson as well as her loving brother, Gilbert Allen Johnson, Jr. Doris graduated from Mullins High School and Coker College. She majored in education and taught school at Dillion High School, Beaufort Elementary and the Depot School USMC at Parris Island. She retired from teaching to raise her family in Beaufort, South Carolina. Her love of her town and the community was truly important to her. She was a devoted member of Carteret St. United Methodist Church for over 62 years, the Suzanna Wesley Circle, Clover Club President, Coker College Alumni association and former Board Member of Coker College's Visitors. Doris belonged to The Historic Beaufort Foundation, Friends of the Beaufort County Library, as well as The Open Land Trust. Doris was a veracious reader, humanitarian, and a true Southern Lady who loved her family and her friends with all of her heart. She never met a stranger and welcomed so many to Beaufort with open arms and an open home. She took the most pride, happiness and tremendous love from her time with her loving four grandchildren. Doris was preceded in death by her beloved first born, Rebecca Johnson Gray. She is survived by her son, James M. Gray, Jr. (Cynthia) and her youngest daughter, Margaret Gray Messner (Michael) and her four grandchildren; James Marion Gray, III "Sammy", Arthur Dickson Cannon "Son", Andrew Wolff Gray, and Charlotte Gray all of whom were the light of her life. Funeral Services will be held at Carteret St. United Methodist Church on Wednesday, November 9, 2016 at 1:30 pm. There will be a private burial for family at Evergreen Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Carteret St. United Methodist Church or The Alzheimer's Association of America. Anderson Funeral Home and Crematory is serving the family.
