Edgar H. Soifer, M.D.

Hilton Head Island, South Carolina - Edgar H. "Ed" Soifer passed away peacefully at home on Sunday morning, November 24, 2024, at the age of 92, with his wife and grandson by his side.
Ed was born in Brooklyn, NY at Beth Moses Hospital to Florence Rosen Soifer and Samuel Soifer. He graduated from Forest Hills High School in 1949 where he played violin in the all-city orchestra. Following his graduation from Washington and Jefferson College in 1953 he received his doctorate in medicine from New York University College of Medicine in 1957. He completed his residency in Urology at Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn, NY in 1962. Having been deferred from military service through the Barry Plan until he finished his medical education, he joined the U.S. Air Force and served as the chief of Urology at the U. S. Air Force Hospital in Torrejon, Spain for three years. Upon his honorable discharge he practiced urology in Fairfax, VA, first in a group then as a solo practice until his retirement in December 1991. During his practice he was also a Clinical Assistant professor of Urology at George Washington University.
Retiring to Hilton Head, Ed soon became one of the founding doctors working with Dr. Jack McConnell to help set up the Volunteers in Medicine Clinic. A man of many interests from opera, to hunting, to sports, including fox hunting! Ed sang in the choir of Congregation Beth Yam and was known to belt out a song or two around a piano bar. He went goose hunting on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and deer hunting in South Carolina. Six a.m. tennis was on his agenda for years and golf was always on his schedule.
Ed is survived by his wife of 36 years, Nancy Modesitt Soifer of Hilton Head, his son John Soifer of Rockville, MD, stepchildren Jeffery Huffines of New York, Susan Jansen of Murphy, NC, Stephen Modesitt and Michael Modesitt of Port St. Lucie, FL and Catherine Parker of Bluffton, SC, two nephews, a niece and three grandsons. He was predeceased by his infant son David Soifer, his parents, brother Jason Soifer, M.D., and sister Charlotte Fleisher.
Dr. Soifer will be buried in a private ceremony in the family plot at Montefiore Cemetery, St. Albans, NY on December 10, 2024. A celebration of life will be planned for a later date.
