Jean Malone Obituary

Jean Marie (McDonell) Malone, age 91, passed away Monday, March 6th at her home in Fort Mill, SC after a brief illness. Born in Olean, NY on June 15, 1925, she was the youngest child of the late Eugene and Catherine McDonell and pre-deceased by siblings Margaret Kelley, Pittsburgh, PA and Allan McDonell, Wellsville, NY. Prior to her marriage to John W. Malone of Georgetown, CT a sales engineer for the former Clark Brothers (Dresser-Rand) in Olean, Jean worked as the first female bank teller of the Olean Trust Company. She raised four children, while transferring with her husband's job from Pittsburgh to Cleveland and finally settling in Fair Haven, NJ. In 1991, she and her husband retired to Hilton Head, SC. Shortly after her husband's death in 2001, she moved to The Cypress of Hilton Head where she enjoyed an active social calendar and newfound friends. In 2013, Jean left The Cypress and moved with her daughter Patrice to Fort Mill, SC to be closer to her grandchildren. Survivors include her four children, Patrice J. Malone, Fort Mill, SC; Peggy (Mark) Cheadle, Fort Mill, SC; Marie Malone, Hilton Head, SC and Jim (Sara) Malone, Brooklyn, NY; and four grandchildren, Katherine/Alex Cheadle, Fort Mill, SC; Eva/Molly Malone, Brooklyn, NY. With her family by her side, Jean gracefully left this world with the strength, class and beauty that exemplified her life, always thinking of others and never complaining. Her loss leaves behind a sea of heartbroken family and friends who will keep her memory alive with every bite of chocolate. A funeral mass will be held at St Francis by the Sea in Hilton Head, SC on Wednesday, April 12th at 2:30pm, followed by a reception. Private burial is on Thursday, April 13th at Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah, GA, next to her beloved husband and a stone's throw away from Johnny Mercer overlooking the Moon River.
