John Kern Obituary

John J. Kern We celebrate the vibrant life of CDR. John J. Kern (74), who passed on Jan, 9 2015 at his home on Hilton Head Island after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Philadelphia, PA and lived in Wayne, PA where he became a Mason. Herndon, VA was his home before retiring to Hilton Head Island. He will be forever loved by his survived wife Kay of Hilton Head Island, his daughters Judi (Mark) of Boulder, CO and Deb (Peter) of Charleston, SC, his grandchildren Madison and Chase, his brother Ed (Sandy) and many extended family members. Following graduations from Villanova and Drexel Universities he enjoyed a long and fulfilling career as a corporate executive with Key Chemical and Unisys Corp. During that time, he continued his devotion to others and lifelong learning, as a professor at St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia. Having a never ending sense of duty and excellence he served his country as a Commander in the United States Coast Guard. After retiring, he never stopped excelling. He was dedicated to helping and guiding others, which led to leadership roles in many organizations. He was committed and honored to be a member and former Commander of the HH Sail and Power Squadron. The roles of church council president at Christ Lutheran Church, founder of Indigo Run Men, and former President of Golden Bear Men's Golf Assoc. provided him with constant enjoyment. Being devoted to family and friends, he enjoyed spending him time traveling the world with them. Golfing, boating, cycling, and cooking were some of his favorite pastimes. He had passion and pride, holding himself to the highest level of excellence in every aspect of his life. His devout faith guided him through life and back into God's arms. Visitation will be held at The Island Funeral Home on Wed. Jan 14, 5 p.m. - 7 p.m. Funeral Services with be held at Christ Lutheran Church on Thurs. Jan 15, 10:30 a.m. Burial with full military honors follows in Beaufort National Cemetery at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to Hilton Head Sail and Power Squadron, c/o Linda Levin, 53 Biltmore, Bluffton, SC 29909. theislandfuneralhome.com.
