John Woodbury Obituary

John Robert Woodbury John Robert Woodbury, 67, of Hilton Head Island died Friday, April 11, 2014 at his residence. He was born in Atlanta, GA on August 20, 1946 to Taliaferro and Mary Virginia Woodbury. John moved to Hilton Head Island 20 years ago from Atlanta. He had a long career as a residential and commercial real estate developer. He was several times the president and an active member of The Inquiry Club in Atlanta. He was a long time member of the Dirty Dozen golf group on Hilton Head. John was the family historian. He loved Joel Chandler Harris' comment, "He survives forever by his wit, his courage and his cunning." John loved reading of all sorts from Lewis Grizard to Pat Conroy to architectural books related to his business. John also loved the beach, cooking and golf. He considered himself a self-proclaimed chef which was validated by all who were entertained at his home. He was an avid Georgia Bull Dogs fan and SEC fan, with the exception of anything orange (you know who are). John is survived by his wife, Barbara Banks Woodbury; 2 daughters, Anslee Cook of Abbington, VA and Julia Landers of Leesburg, VA; 4 grandchildren; 2 sisters, Gail (Vic) Campbell of Greer, SC and Jane (Micky) Thornton of Covington, TN; brother, Julian T. (Brenda) Woodbury II of Candler, NC and his beloved companions Dickens and Conroy. Visitation will be held today, Tuesday, April 15 from 12 to 1 pm with the service at 1 pm at The Island Funeral Home and Crematory, 4 Cardinal Road, Hilton Head. Burial will follow at Six Oaks Memorial Park in Sea Pines. Donations may be made to Hospice Care of the Lowcountry, PO Box 3827, Bluffton, SC, 29910 or Hilton Head Humane Association, PO Box 21790, Hilton Head Island, SC, 29925. www.theislandfuneralhome.com.

John was one of my closest friends at Avondale High School, and we have stayed in touch over the years since his move to Hilton Head. He was one of the finest and most loyal friends one could ever ask for, and never had an unkind word for anyone. He will be sorely missed.

Dear Barbara,
So sorry to hear about John but at least he is at peace now. Our visits to H.H. won't be the same without meeting John at the Beach Club.
