While outdoor editor of The Augusta Chronicle (1964-2000), I fished out of Beaufort, going to the Island Outfitters on Ladys Island. The store was owned by Joe. I would get weekly fishing reports from him to publish in the Friday editions of my newspaper. Later, my wife and I joined him on Pritchard's Island, surf-fishing for redfish. He also invited us to take a break and stay at his cabin on Fripp. No telephone, no TV and we enjoyed it. Joe was one of a kind and we will miss him. After retiring at the end of January 2000, we took fewer trips to Beaufort so we lost touch with Joe. During our active time, we enjoyed his company. Please accept our condolences.

If I were asked to come up with a single word that I felt described Joe Mix, that word would be "GENUINE".
Joe Mix was the real deal. With Joe, you got Joe. He called it as he saw it, and you always knew where you stood with him.
I have never known Joe to misrepresent himself as something other than what he truly was. I never heard him say anything, with seriousness, that he did not feel or mean. I never heard a dishonest word come from his mouth nor saw a dishonest action performed. His honesty was admirable, and set a fine example.
This should not be misconstrued with being forthright though. Joe often held thought before speaking and chose when to hold silence...he was frugal with his words.
He was not quick to judgement, rather, he would examine things with an open mind and refrain from argument or condemnation. When asked though, he would give you his unbiased opinion.
Like all of us, Joe enjoyed making a buck, and he was pretty talented at doing it. More so though, Joe enjoyed giving a buck. His generosity was a special gift and many of us who knew him experienced this. Best of all, many who did NOT know him, experienced this. In his giving, his genuineness is once again on display. Joe gave from the bottom of his heart. There was no motive or hidden agenda. He gave strictly because it helped or brought joy to others.
He has barely "moved-on" and I miss him already.
Thank you Joe for being such a beautiful human soul !

A note of thanks to Mr.Mix for his work and efforts on the pier at Hunting Island State Park. It has always been appreciated. Please know that the facility he help build over 30 years ago has been enjoyed by thousands and is still being used today
My sincere condolences to the family.

Joe was a great gift to Beaufort. He firmly established himself here. He put his many talents to work which enriched the lives of many In Beaufort County. His zealous, positive, youthful outlook into just about everything stood out and was a welcoming blessing to all who encountered him. Joe was my Mother's (Mary Mix McDonald) younger brother. Since my marriage to Willis Jones (in 1981), from Atlanta, we have visited Joe and Lin every year since then. We have watched his children and grandchildren grow and thrive, turning into marvelous Christian adults. His generous spirit and sense of fun will be sorely missed. No one could tell a joke like Joe. The twinkle in his eye was fabulous, especially when he knew he had pulled one over you. Prayers to his wonderful wife, Lin, and his children Bob, Steve, Amy, and their families. It will be our privilege to celebrate his life with you all on the 12th.
Much love,
Cousin Sandy McDonald Jones

A loving, kind hearted special man who loved his family; children, grandchildren and great grandchildren He lived his life sharing his wonderful sense of humor, compassion and love of life. A larger than life personality who tremendously impacted my childhood and memories that I have cherished throughout my life. Uncle Joe will be greatly missed but we celebrate his wonderful well lived life.
