Robert Oberst Obituary

Dr. Robert John Oberst Sr. Dr. Robert John Oberst Sr., PhD-CFP of Bluffton, SC passed away on Wednesday, November 30, 2011 in the Memorial Medical University, Savannah, GA. He was born in Hackensack, NJ on August 20, 1929. He was the son of the late Bernard and Elsie Schneider Oberst. His financial career stared as an Agent-Manager for the Prudential Insurance Company and he earned The Million Dollar Round Table award. Then he became actively involved with the International Association for Financial Planning. He became a Certified Financial Planner (CFP) in 1978. He received his PhD from Columbia Pacific University in financial management in 1984. He served as Chairman, Board of Regents College of Financial Planning; Producer and Host, Financial Planning Today TV show; President Monmouth Ocean Development Cnc; Board of Directors Monmouth Council Boy Scouts of America; Trustee Brookdale Community College Foundation 1986; member Institute Certified Financial Planning; NJ Association of Life Underwriters (President 1969-70); President International Association Financial Planning; Certified Financial Planner of the Year 1979; Silver Gull Service Award Monmouth Ocean Development Council; US Navy Veteran 1946-50. An avid Republican, he enjoyed civil war history; gourmet dining, theatre, reading, a good cigar and a glass of wine. He retired in 1992 and moved to Hilton Head Island. Finding retirement boring, he founded The Palmetto State Shooting Center, Okatie, SC which he ran with his son, Carl. He was an avid shooter, hunter and marksman and earned many awards. He was a member of the Bluffton United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Ingrid "Peppi" Oberst of Bluffton; two sons, Robert J. (Jacqueline) Oberst, Jr. of Matawan, NJ and Carl E. Oberst of Bluffton; sister, Dr. Marilyn T. Oberst of Middleton, WI; six grandchildren, Kimberly, Shawna, Lianne, Emily and Christian Oberst and Tammy Chervinsky; and one great grandson, Michael Chervinsky. He was predeceased by his daughter, Jeanne Cruse. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, December 3, 2011 at Sauls Funeral Home, 90 Simmonsville Rd., Bluffton, SC. The family requests memorial gifts be made in memory of Dr. Robert John Oberst Sr. to the American Heart Association, 4217 Park Place Court, Glen Allen, VA 23060-9979.

Robert, Carl, and Mrs. Oberst, I'm so sorry to read of your dad's/husband's passing. It has been a long time since I've been in touch with you, but I remember Bob welcoming me into your house as a good high school friend of Robert. I'd like to extend my condolences for your loss as I will never forget the privilege of having known you all and experienced your warmth and generosity. I will never forget you.
