Roderick Allen McLean M.D.

Roderick Allen McLean, MD February 26, 1920-January 17, 2015 Roderick Allen McLean, MD was born in Waterville, New York to Charles and Mary Allen McLean. Following his graduation from Waterville High School, he went on to Hamilton College, where he was a member of Psi Upsilon Fraternity, a guard on the football team, catcher on the baseball team and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1942. He was named to the Psi U All American Football Team and invited by the Philadelphia Eagles to try out for their pro team in 1942. In 1945, he received his degree as a Medical Doctor from the Syracuse University College of Medicine and was commissioned in the United States Navy as a Ltjg, serving as a general surgeon at Veteran's Hospital in Johnson City, TN from 1946 through 1948. Returning to Syracuse, Dr. McLean pursued postgraduate obstetrical training at St. Joseph Hospital and practiced Obstetrics and Gynecology in Syracuse, delivering over 15,000 babies during his almost forty years of practice. Dr. McLean was a Fellow of the International College of Surgeons, Fellow of The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. McLean served as President of the Medical Staff of St. Mary's Hospital and St. Joseph Hospital, Syracuse, NY. He was concurrently Attending OB & GYN Departments at St. Mary's, St. Joseph and Community General Hospitals and served as Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics at Community General Hospital for five years and at St. Mary's Hospital for ten years. Dr. McLean was a Clinical Professor of Obstetrics at Upstate Medical Center and was named Professor Emeritus upon retiring. At that time, he was also conferred with Emeritus Status at Community General Hospital and St. Joseph Hospital. Dr. McLean was a founding member of the Obstetrical High Risk Clinic at Upstate Medical Center, President of the Onondaga County Medical Society, Chairman of the Maternal and Child Welfare Committee of the Medical Society of the State of New York. In addition, Dr. McLean was the author of many papers on maternal health. Upon retirement, Rod moved to Hilton Head Island in January 1988 to marry his wife, the former Marilyn MacDonald. Dr. McLean was a founding member of the Volunteers in Medicine Clinic on Hilton Head Island, serving from 1994-2006 as a Member of the Board of Trustees, President of the Medical Staff Executive Committee, Chairman of the Department of Gynecology. In addition, Dr. McLean practiced gynecology every week at the V.I.M. Clinic from the opening of the clinic until 2010. Dr. McLean was a pioneer in performing inter-uterine blood transfusions for the RH factor problems of the unborn fetus. In conjunction with the Welch Allyn Company of Skaneateles Falls, NY, Dr. McLean pioneered the invention and development of the disposable illuminated speculum, a surgical gynecological instrument now used throughout the world. An avid golfer, Rod was a member of Onondaga Golf & Country Club in Syracuse, NY and the Country Club of Hilton Head. For many years, he was a member of the locally famous Syracuse Golf Bandits. Dr. McLean was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Hilton Head Island and served as an Elder. In addition to his wife, he is survived by four children, Roderick G. of Boise, ID, Barbara Ward of Portsmouth, NH, Douglas of Galveston, TX, Scott of Sidney, NY; four step children, Carol Ann Wingrove, Andrew MacDonald Tedesco and Roger MacDonald Tedesco of Hilton Head Island, and Ellen Fay of Atlanta, GA, eleven grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, one brother, Douglas of Bradenton, FL. He was predeceased by his first wife, Sue Greeley, his brother, Bruce, and sister Janice Ford. At his request, his ashes will be interred at the Columbarium at the First Presbyterian Church on Hilton Head Island. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.
