Shirley Walker-Davis Obituary
Shirley Sasso Walker-Davis peacefully passed away at her home at The Seabrook of Hilton Head with her family at her side on September 19, 2025. She was 103.
Shirley was born on April 13, 1922, in Panama City, Republic of Panama, to Vernon Abraham and Beryl Henriques Sasso. She was the youngest child of four children and was predeceased by her siblings David, Dorothy (Chassin), and Lois (Maduro).
In the Panama Canal Zone during World War II, Shirley met Navy Lt. Commander Edward Barnwell Walker of the South Carolina Low Country. They soon married and after the war raised a family while living at various times in San Paulo, Brazil; Toronto, Canada; and several townships in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, during Ed's corporate career with Johnson and Johnson (J&J).
Following Ed's 1974 retirement from J&J, Shirley and Ed moved to Sea Pines on Hilton Head Island. A talented golfer who won numerous championships in the area, Shirley had 13 holes in one during her lifetime - that's right: 13! The Shirley Walker-Davis Championship was created in her honor at Sea Pines Country Club.
Shirley was her own person with a uniquely independent spirit and a soul that had more than a bit of "spice." She had a combination of energy, enthusiasm, and a bit of mischief that endeared her to family and friends. She had a gift for making connections and friends far and wide. Shirley loved competition, was a loyal friend, and truly appreciated the blessings she had throughout her life. Above all, she was the centerpiece of a family she boundlessly loved, a family that absolutely adored and cherished her in return.
Shirley is survived by her children Michelle Lund (Paul), David, and Rhett (Ruth Anne); four grandchildren Heather (Eugene), Holly (John), Marc (Cindy), and Alex (Kristin); six great-grandchildren (Sioned Miles, Carson and Ava Lund, Aria Pretorious, and Everett and Harrison Walker); and one great-great-grandchild (Ruaidhrí Busch). After Ed's passing in 1986, Shirley married Glenn Davis in 1991. Glenn also predeceased her.
Shirley loved Hilton Head Island and the people of this community. Her family is grateful to all the health care providers whose "tune up services" along with playful camaraderie during her visits helped her get to 103. The family also is sincerely appreciative of the support provided by all the staff at The Seabrook these past nine years, especially the Home Health Team over the last several months, whose dedication, kindness, and professionalism were invaluable.
Interment will be private with family and close friends at St. Helena's Church, Beaufort.
