Thomas Arnold Farr

Thomas Farr Obituary

Thomas Arnold Farr Thomas Arnold Farr, 77, passed away Tuesday morning June 22, 2010, after a long life that began in New York, NY on July 9, 1932. He was the son of the late Francis Shelton Farr and Louise Arnold Jackson. An active member in the Beaufort community, he will be remembered as an honorable, dedicated man who was a great believer in community service. Although slowed down by a stroke, heart attack, and other health issues, Tom Farr remained active up to the end and continued to influence others with his humor, knowledge, and wisdom. Tom is survived by his wife of 28 years Terry Livingston Farr, sons Thomas II, Kenneth, and Edward, step children Peter Lawrence and Cynthia Lawrence Ziegler, grandchildren Regis, Thomas III, Carolyn, and Sonja Farr, Hewitt and Lily Farr, Read and Claudia Ziegler, daughters-in-law Geneva Farr, Rebecca Farr, and Dreya Weber Farr, son-in-law Read Ziegler, sisters Diana Farr Louis of Athens, Greece, and Pricilla Farr McCord of Salisbury, CT. He's also survived by step-brother Woodward Register, step-sister Nancy Register Wise, nieces Adrienne Naessil, Marion Skinner, and Mary Ann Gildroy, all sharing in remorse and celebration of a man that created so much love. Tom's older brother Fredrich Shelton Farr and sister Nancy Farr Cady preceded his death, as did his beloved animals Sheba, Sammy, Sam I, and Max, who started it all. After graduating the Pomfret school and Princeton University (class of 54), Tom started his career at IBM and moved into stocks and became a member of the New York Stock Exchange. He retired in 1996 as a financial advisor with Merrill Lynch in Beaufort. Military service included the US Army 1953-1955 and the US Air Force Reserve 1955-1957. Tom was an accomplished singer and sang with the Princeton University Glee Club, University Glee Club of NY, the Colorado Festival Chorus, the Bay Street Rollers, the Harbor Masters Barbershop Singers, and Low Country Chorale, of which he was a founder. His commitment to serving his community included membership with the Rotary Club of Beaufort, where he won the Paul Harris Fellow Award in May 1996. He was also the co-founder of the Farside Investment Club in Beaufort. Tom was a former member of the vestry of Saint Helena's Episcopal Church, a former board member of Main Street Beaufort, and a member of the Thursday Club. His 78 years were full of life and love and he leaves us with this and more. In lieu of flowers, contributions to Friends of Caroline Hospice, 1110 13 St. Port Royal, SC 29935, or the Beaufort Memorial Foundation, PO Box 2233, Beaufort SC 29901 would be greatly appreciated. Memorial services will be announced at a later date. Copeland Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

I never met Tom, but my mother spoke of her uncle with love, telling of a man full of life and warmth. May his passing be a blessing of the wisdom and joy he shared.

Terry, I remember good times singing with Tom in Lowcountry Chorale. Cindy and I are in Canada so cannot attend service. You and your family are in our prayers.
