William Bishop Obituary

William Bishop
June 21, 1938 - March 5, 2022
Bluffton, South Carolina - Captain William C. Bishop USN (ret) passed into the Lord's company on March 5, 2022. He was born in Queens County of New York City on June 21, 1938. He was educated in the Roman Catholic schools tradition, attending St. Catherine of Sienna Grammar School, Most Holy Trinity High School and St. John's University on Long Island.
Upon graduation from college, Bill enlisted in the United States Navy where he served honorably for 30 years, retiring in Hawaii in 1990 and returning to the Low Country in 1996. During his career, he served on the nuclear powered submarine, USS Sam Rayburn (SSBN-635). He also served in Saigon, Vietnam as well as Comptroller for several staffs and he commanded a Defense Logistic Agency in Hawaii. He attended the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA and the Naval War College.
In 1961, Bill and his wife Joan (nee Murphy) married in New York City. They had 60 glorious and wonderfully happy years together including 14 years in Honolulu, HI. Surviving are his wife and three children: Anne Marie Larmon and her husband Tom; Kathleen Murray; James Patrick and his wife Mary (Maher). There are 7 grandchildren, Kelly Anne Mullen, William Clifford, Jill Murray, twins Audrey and Brittney Murray, Austin and Connor Bishop and one great grandchild, Sage MaryAnn Bishop.
In retirement, Bill enjoyed traveling and tennis, playing and competing on many local teams in the USTA. He served in the community and was active in his Church ministries. He will be missed for his wit and many stories. Always willing to assist his neighbors and friends, Bill practiced the true Christian virtue, to love thy neighbor.
The funeral will be private with interment at the Beaufort National Cemetery at a later date. Donations in his memory can be made to Mustard Seed Communities (www.mustardseed.com).

Joan: We just learned of Bill's passing. We hope this message reaches you. Bill was a special person and a great shipmate with me on the Edwards when we were both junior officers. He was always a big help to me. We really appreciate seeing you and Bill at your home not too long ago in Bluffton. Thank you again for your hospitality. We hope you are faring well. Know that you have many friends; friends who think very highly of Bill.

To Bill's family,
Bill was a great friend. We first met in submarine school and later when both of us served in beautiful Guam. I carried on many e-conversations with Bill over the years and miss his wit and wisdom. Bill was a perfect Naval officer and a kind and caring man. God bless him and his family

Dear Joan, family and friends of Bill´s,
On behalf of the United States Submarine Veterans, we offer our sincere condolences at Bill´s passing. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. We are always saddened whenever a fellow "Bubblehead" departs on Eternal Patrol. He served with honor at multiple commands including the nuclear submarine USS Sam Rayburn (SSBN-635).
To our "Brother-of-the-Phin" we say, "Sailor, rest your oar. We have the watch. Fair Winds and Following Seas." Thank you for your service to our country.
Joan and family... "may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in every way. The Lord be with you." 2 Thessalonians 3:16 (ESV).
