George Carey Obituary

George R. Carey, Sr., 80

1940 - 2021

Salem - Mr. George R "Bob" Carey, Sr. 80 years of Salem and formerly of Nahant, died on Monday, February 8, 2021 in Salem Hospital after complications due to Covid 19 Virus. He is the husband of Mrs. Mary T. (McDonough) Carey with whom he shared 58 years of marriage. He was born in Woburn, the son of the late Daniel F. and Maureen (O'Connor) Carey. He was raised in Woburn and was a graduate of Woburn High School. He attended Bridgton Academy, and in 1963 he graduated with a degree in Business Administration from Boston College. He lived in Nahant for many years serving on the school committee, member of the Knights of Columbus, CCD volunteer and president of the Holy Name Society at St Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, and many years boating, fishing and lobstering with his family and friends. In 1998 Bob and Mary left the family home in Nahant to settle in Salem, MA. They soon discovered they're special place nearby at Winter Island (aka Mary's island) where most mornings they'd enjoy their coffee and pastries watching the boats, seagulls & of course "the lighthouse".

He was a sales manager for Atlas Glen-Mor , a fuel oil business in Chelsea for over 20 years retiring in 2009. After his retirement he worked with the Solimine Funeral Home in Lynn in many capacities but mostly as a driver. At Solimine's he was well respected by his co-workers and families.

Bob was a gentleman, a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. Family was everything to him and family was always around. He almost never missed his children's and grandchildren's sporting events and activities. Bob was an avid golfer and he and Mary spent many summer Sunday mornings golfing with their children and grandchildren. He loved gardening in Nahant and in Salem. He was a man of great patience, who enjoyed jigsaw puzzles. Bob was also a man of great faith. He will be missed dearly by his family and friends.

In addition to his wife Mary he leaves his children, George R. Carey, Jr. and his wife Lisa of Gloucester, Kevin J. Carey and his husband Lee Ramos of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, Mary Elizabeth Morency and her husband John of Beverly, Stephen P. Carey and his wife Kristi of Alpharetta, Georgia, Joseph "Jay" Carey and his husband Christopher DeAngelis of New York City, his grandchildren George III, Molly, Maggie, Maeve Carey, Jack, Kevin, Daniel Morency and Meghan and Walker Carey, a great granddaughter McKenzie. He leaves his favorite grand dog Roxy of New York. George also leaves his brother in law and sister in law Joseph and Margaret "Peggy" McDonough of Woburn and a brother in law Lee Staaf of Gloucester. He is the brother of the late Daniel F. Carey, Jr.

Service Information: His funeral will be held on Friday, February 12, 2021 at 8:30 AM from the Solimine Funeral Home, 67 Ocean Street (Rte 1A) Lynn followed by a funeral mass in St. Thomas Aquinas Church, Nahant at 10:00 AM.
