LYNNFIELD - Peter S. Belitsos, PE, age 92 years, of Lynnfield, died Monday, Feb. 2, 2015, at Union Hospital in Lynn, after a brief illness.He was the husband of the late Ida (Arvanites) Belitsos, the love of his life, who died on Jan. 22, and with whom he shared 71 happy years of marriage. His passing was truly hastened by the fact that he could not bear to live without his bride, whom he married on Feb. 13, 1944.Born in Washington, D.C., on July 19, 1922, he was the son of the late Stamatios P. and Demetra (Lynardakis) Belitsos. He moved to Lynn as a young boy, attended Lynn schools and graduated from Lynn English High School, Class of 1940.Peter was a pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. During his service, he flew missions in Normandy and Northern France, was shot down over Germany in 1944 and was a prisoner of war for eight months.After his discharge in 1945, he attended Tufts University and graduated in 1949 with a BS in mechanical engineering. He was employed as a manufacturing engineer for General Electric, working in Lynn at the West Lynn Works and Allerton Street; he also worked for GE in Lynchburg, Va., and Everett. After retiring from GE, he served as the district industrial manager for the first U.S. Coast Guard District, retiring in 1981.He was a member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Lynn and the Wyoming Lodge A.F. & A.M. in Melrose and Mt. Carmel Lodge A.F. & A.M. An avid golfer, he was a member of the Salem Country Club and a charter member of Thompson Country Club in North Reading. He was an avid Red Sox and Patriots fan, and he and his son Stephen were able to watch the Patriots win the Super Bowl on Sunday night at the hospital.He is survived by one son, Stephen Belitsos and his wife Cate Chant of East Calais, Vt.; one sister, Christine Peduto of Stoughton; six grandchildren, Louise and her husband Michael Morrison, Peter and his wife Tammy Belitsos, Andrew and his wife Leah Belitsos, Demetra and her husband Jon Atkins, and Luke and Libby Belitsos; six great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Constantine "Gus" Belitsos and his sister Georgia Simmons.Service information: Funeral from the PARKER Funeral Home, 35 Franklin St., Lynn, on Saturday, with calling hours from 9-10:30 a.m., followed by services at St. George Greek Orthodox Church at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery.
