Robert J. Hanlon

US Navy VeteranRevere-Robert J. hanlon, retired Chelsea Fire Dept. Acting-Captain, died on Wednesday April 4 at the Union Hospital in Lynn after a long illness. Born and raised in Chelsea, he was the son of the late Thomas and Marion (Keyes) Hanlon. He attended Chelsea Schools and graduated high school as a uniformed member of the US Navy assigned to the USS Boston. A WWII veteran he served primarily in the Pacific Theater, Tokyo Bay and post-atomic cleanup of Hiroshima, Japan. Robert was honorably discharged in 1946 and returned to Chelsea. He was appointed the Chelsea Fire Dept. as a Reserve Fireman on September 8, 1947 and was made a permanent Fireman on November 17th that same year. Robert was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on November 23, 1964 and retired from the department as acting Captain on September 30, 1982 after 35 years of dedicated service. He was the beloved husband of 57 years to Arlene G. (Clinton). Together they resided for a time in Chelsea and Lynn and for the past 38 years in Revere. He was a past member of the D.A.V. Post 64, V.F.W. DeFronzo Post 2346 Saugus, the American Legion and the Chelsea Fire Fighters Union Local 937.Survived by his beloved wife Arlene, he was the devoted father of Gary T. Brewer and his wife Cathleen of Lynn. Dear brother of Helen Hanlon and Marion Denning, both of Chelsea, Charles Hanlon of FL, the late Edward and Thomas Hanlon. Cherished grandfather of Shana Welch-Romanovitch, Lesley, Bridget, Rebecca and Caroline Brewer. Adored great grandfather of Alyssa Romanovitch.Service Information: Relatives and friends are most kingly invited to attend the Funeral from the Frank A. Welsh and Son's Funeral Home 718 Broadway Chelsea on Tuesday April 10 at 9 a.m. Followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Pius V Church, Maple Street, Lynn at 10:30 a.m. Services will conclude with interment in Pine Grove Cemetery, Lynn. Visiting hours will be held at the Welsh Funeral Home on Monday from 4 n 8 p.m. Funeral Home is handicapped accessible, parking opposite Funeral Home. Should friends and family desire, contributions in his memory may be made to the Heart Fund.
