Scott Kearney Obituary

Former Lynn residentSANFORD, Maine - Scott W. Kearney, 59, of Lucas Lane in Sanford, died Monday, June 10, 2013 at Goodall Hospital in Sanford.Scott was born Nov. 24, 1953 in Lynn, the son of Elmer and Barbara (Foster) Kearney. He grew up in Lynn and was a graduate of Lynn English High School. Following high school, Scott enlisted into the U.S. Marine Corps. He met and married his future wife and soul mate, Deborah J. Mortensen on Aug. 23, 1980. They made their home in Lynn before moving to Maine. As a youngster, Scott enjoyed coming to the family camp at Square Pond in Shapleigh.Scott was a man of many talents. He could fix, repair, or build just about anything. He was the first to jump in when family or friends needed an extra set of hands to complete a project. He did painting, electrical work and being a true Yankee, he could improvise with the best of them. Duct tape and used parts could suffice in most of his repairs. Scott was more sociable than most; he could strike up a conversation with anyone and before he left, he had made another friend.Scott was an avid outdoorsman. He hunted, went fishing in all types of weather and hiked in the woods for relaxation. Camping with his family and friends included rounds of horse shoes. He swore he got better with his choice in drinks! As a young man, Scott learned to scuba dive and made some good money retrieving jewelry from the depths of the ocean. A lifelong swimmer, he remained fit and active. A night playing cards with friends made for a good ending of the day. With his different surgeries and care from his nurses, he could swindle money from them just by sharing a joke and smile.Scott believed in giving back to his community. He was a member of the Elks in Sanford and for many Tuesday evenings he worked and entertained on Bingo nights at the Elks. He was also a fellow Mason and member of the Preble Lodge 143 A.F. & A.M., also of Sanford. Scott's sense of service was such that he didn't need fame or recognition for helping others. He is survived by wife, Deborah of Sanford; his three sons, Jason A. Kearney of Biddeford, Jeffrey S. Kearney of Limerick and Shawn P. Kearney of Sanford; his brother and sisters, Donald R. Kearney and wife Barbara of Shapleigh, Judith A. Hoague of Peabody, and Priscilla L. Bakula and husband Richard of Peabody; many grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and great nieces and great nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and by his sister, Brenda Kearney.Service information: A funeral service will be held on Friday, June 14, 2013 at 12 p.m. at the Crossroads United Methodist Church, 16 Grammar Road in Sanford with Rev.
