Tom Bourke Obituary

Tom Bourke, 73

1947 - 2021

Ipswich - Thomas Stephen Bourke, a longtime Lynn resident, passed away at home on Thursday, January 7, 2021. He was surrounded by his immediate family.

Born on July 10, 1947, Tom began his partnership with the City of Lynn. He attended St. Mary's from grammar school through high school, graduating in 1965. While at St. Mary's, Tom enjoyed considerable success in both academics and athletics. He served as captain of the baseball team, was named Most Valuable Player of the football team, made the Lynn Daily Item and Agganis All-Star Teams, and was a member of the Boston Globe's All-Scholastic Team. He was also a finalist for the Archdiocesan system-wide Student-Athlete Award.

After high school, Tom went on to graduate from Providence College, and later, was a Shakespeare Fellow at the University of Michigan, where he earned his M.A. in English.

But Tom's biggest contributions didn't come in either the classroom or on the field; they came in his long standing service to the community. At 16, Tom began landscaping at St. Mary's, which he continued for the next 57 years—through this past fall—in a largely voluntary capacity. Because of this, in July 2020, Tom received the school's William F. Connell '55 Service Award, which is presented to an alumnus who demonstrates consistent and exemplary service. (Though he considered his best reward to be chatting with or getting to know the countless people who would pass by or through the church and school grounds.)

In 1980, after teaching for a year at St. Mary's High School, Tom began his career at North Shore Community College (NSCC), where he played a pivotal role in boosting the school's enrollment and securing its future success. During his tenure at North Shore, Tom helped facilitate innumerable benefits and services to the Lynn community—including food and blood drives, cleanups at Lynn Woods, the establishment of a child care center, a women's center, health and intercultural fairs, and theater and arts programs. On a more personal level, he also mentored and motivated so many individuals to reach for and achieve their goals. Tom retired as Dean of Students at NSCC in 2007. He also served on the Lynn School Committee from 1986-1990.

Tom leaves behind his wife, Madeline, of 51 years, who was also a longtime Lynn resident and public servant. He was a proud father to his two children, Jessica (with fiancée Brian) and Eric (with wife Erin), and a loving "Pappy" to his five granddaughters, Ainsley, Reese, Mairin, Ella and Emry, all of Manchester-by-the Sea. In addition, Tom leaves his brother, Rob, and sister-in-law, Deb, of Alton Bay, NH, as well as his nephew, Bobby (and family), of Topsfield. He held very, very close and dear relationships with his many cousins, other family members, and friends. Those who knew him were better because of it.

Tom was also well known for his impeccable demeanor on the golf course.

I'm sorry to hear of Tom's passing. When I was a freshman at St. Mary's, I remember Tom was brought in to teach a mini-course in Lynn City Government. This was before he was even a full-time teacher. When Mayor Caggiano died that year, Tom brought in John O'Brien and the two of them explained to this class of 9th graders how the city would run until a special election could be held. Years later, Tom was a teammate of mine on the McCarthy Glass softball team and even though I was one of the younger guys on the team, he treated us all as equals. I was happy to see he went on to have a great career at NSCC and did so much for St. Mary's and the city of Lynn. Tom and his family will be in my thoughts and prayers.

A very beautiful and accurate description of Toms life.I can attest that Toms impeccable demeanor carried over to the softball field and all other aspects of his life. Nobody knew Tom as an acquaintance, because he was a real friend and positive influence to anyone that ever met him. Way to soon. RIP

Dear Madeline and family,
Jim and I were so sorry to hear of Tom’s passing. A flood of memories
come back, especially when Eric and Danny would play together as little
boys and Jessica babysat for our two children almost 40 years ago.
So happy to hear about your grandchildren. We have 3 ourselves. Anna
just born this past July. Bill and Mark continue to be such dear friends and so we get news from them time to time. Where have the years gone?
Looking forward to seeing you in person when that is possible.
All our love and prayers,
Jim and Joy Morris

Dear Madeleine,
So very sorry for your loss. I consider myself very lucky to have played golf once a year with Tom at the St. Mary's tournament. He always had a positive outlook no matter how bad we played. It was a pleasure hanging out with him for just 6 hours once a year for the last 20 plus years. What Tom accomplished in his life and how many people and needy organizations he touched proves what a great human being and True Christian he was. His service to others should be an inspiration for many of us to follow. There is no doubt that he will be sorely missed by all his friends and family. I know for certain that we will miss him leading our foursome as Captain, as he is truly irreplaceable.
May God Bless you and your family.

So sorry to hear about Tom. He and my brother Tom were lifetime friends from St. Mary's to Providence and beyond. Whenever my brother was up visiting from PA, they would always get together. I used to bump into Tom at the gym fairly frequently,,,,,, when I was going of course. I was embarrassed at how much more active and in better shape he was than me who was much younger. We shared a lot of laughs and stories about the past. Just a great person!!. He will be sorely missed.

Madeline, I'm so sorry to see of Tom's passing. I'll always remember how my dad would pick up and drive a bunch of boys home for lunch when we at St. Mary's Grammar School. Tom was always one of the most appreciative ----anytime I'd meet him, he would always mention it. It was nice to run into the both of you a few years ago in Wolfeboro, NH---of course, Tom remembered me---he never forgot anyone. My sincere sympathy to you and your family.

I was so very saddened to hear of Tom’s illness and passing. I have fond memories of walking down Franklin Street with my St Mary’s grammar school kids,Tom being one of them. Tom loved talking to my grandfather and he was especially kind to my son while at North Shore. He had a life well spent and will be missed by many. My deepest sympathy to Madeline and family

I am so sad to hear about Tom's passing. He was such a wonderful man. I appreciated how welcoming he was to our family, inviting us over to the house every Easter, continuing the tradition from RahRah and El. I was honored to be invited to Tommy and Madeline's 50th wedding anniversary celebration. Such a beautiful day. The look of surprise on his face was priceless.
Gone too soon.
You have many people waiting for you in heaven. Rest In Peace.
Love,
Heidi, DJ, Bill, and Chris
And Donny and my mom and dad mom in heaven

“I am forever a better person because of Tom” There is truth in those words. I didn’t see it then but know it now; he had always shown compassion to all walks of people. The time I worked at NSCC his compassion for others imprinted on me and it has enabled me to do many things through out my life without barriers
