Lynn and Formerly of Swampscott - Walter Edward Newhall, Jr., age 90, of Lynn and formerly of Swampscott, died on Thursday, August 8, 2024, following a lengthy illness. He was the devoted husband of Linda A. (McGovern) Newhall with whom he shared over 61 years of marriage. Born in Watertown, in 1934, he was the son of the late Walter E. Newhall, Sr. and Mary Ellen (Jennings) Newhall. He was raised and educated in Lynn and graduated from St. Mary's Boys High School in 1952. In 1954, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, served during the Korean War and was Honorably Discharged in 1958. He later went on to receive his Bachelor's Degree in Finance from Bentley College. Walter worked for many years at the United States Treasury Department as an inspector for the IRS. He loved the Town of Swampscott and volunteered there his whole life. He served as a Town Meeting member for the Town of Swampscott for over 50 years, and on the Town Finance Committee. He volunteered for 25 years at Swampscott Little as a manager and coach. He coached and served as President and Vice President for Swampscott Pop Warner. He was Treasurer for the Swampscott Boosters Club and was honored as the Booster's Man of the Year. Walter was a longtime and active parishioner of St. John the Evangelist Church where he taught CCD for 25 years and served as a Lector at Mass. He was also a longtime member of Gannon Municipal Golf Course in Lynn. His children and grandchildren were his greatest enjoyment. He never missed a sporting event or anything else they were involved in. He enjoyed many long trips to North Carolina with his son Greg, loved having breakfast and lunch often with his grandchildren and babysitting them every Wednesday when they were young.
Service Information: In addition to his wife Linda, Walter is survived by his loving children, Gregory T. Newhall of Lynn and Leah A. Ryan and her late husband Capt. Mark A. Ryan, SFD; his beloved grandchildren, Sarah and Zack Ryan of Swampscott; his brother Thomas Newhall, whose Tuesday visits brought great happiness to Walter, and his late wife Ann of Lynn and his many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his infant son Stephen Newhall and his sisters, Patricia (Newhall) Dixon and Helen (Newhall) Durgin and her late husband Harold.
