Donald Bowers Obituary

Donald Bowers, 86, a resident of Upland for 65 years, passed away on April 2, 2014 in Reno, Nevada, where he recently moved to be near his daughter and son-in-law.

He was a teacher for 34 years, beginning his career at Upland Elementary School, continuing at Upland Junior High. Later, he taught choral music and world history at Azusa High School, moving to Alta Loma High School a few years later, from which he retired in 1986. He was an inspirational teacher for many of his students and fellow performers. He performed in many musicals and operas in the Inland Valley. His favorite role was Don Quixote in "Man of La Mancha." He was also baritone soloist at a number of local churches, most recently for 20 years at Pilgrim Congregational Church in Pomona. He also sang in many chorales in Southern California.

In 1971, Don took a sabbatical from his teaching job and spent a year in Europe with his wife Bunny, travelling and taking music classes at an extension of the University of Oregon in Stuttgart, Germany. He also spent two summers in Santa Fe, New Mexico singing with the Santa Fe Desert Chorale. He and his wife enjoyed travelling throughout the United States and Europe.

He is survived by his daughters, Janet Toti (Dominick), of Sparks, Nevada and Carol Bowers (Sherri Jordan), of Colorado Springs, Colorado; his brother, Gary, of San Marcos, California; four grandchildren: Joanna, Jeff, Fred and Leanne; and eight great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at Pilgrim Congregational Church in Pomona on Saturday, May 10, at 11 AM. Donations may be made to the Special Olympics or the American Cancer Society.

May God bless the good soul of Mr. Donald Bowers. He was my chorus teacher at Alta Loma high school in 1978. He encouraged me to do Elvis imitations at the school and it changed my life forever. I am still singing in bands to this day. Donald Bowers believed in me and it completely changed my life for the good. For the last 28 years I have been the vocalist for my band, ST. MADNESS. God bless you Donald Bowers, I hope to see you in heaven one day.

Sincerely,

Patrick Flannery

Donald (Don) Bowers will be "Mr. B" to many of his students and I. He was, by far, the one individual who allowed me to be me. He was supportive, and understanding. Mr. B had his times of frustration (especially from the Bass section in A capella Choir), but was always someone who had unbelieveable patience. I was unavailable at the time of his funeral, but I understand that the choirs of years past gave him the BEST send-off ever. B will be missed, but I have no doubt that he and Bunny are tearing it up in heaven. I will forever consider him a friend, teacher and the best person I have ever known. Thanks for everything Mr. B. I have enjoyed a lifetime of music because of you.

You made a lot of young people believe in themselves, because you believed in them. Your enthusiasm and energy was the greatest inspiration to all. You'll be greatly missed, but your legacy will remain forever..

Many years ago, we have been hosts to Don and Bunny on their visit to Germany. What started as an exchange programme between schools in Upland and Mainz, Germany, led to a long-lasting, inspiring friendship. Over many years, we regularly wrote letters and visited each other in Upland, Colorado, Mainz (Germany), Weißenthurm (Germany) and Hamburg (Germany).
Don's open-mindedness and broad interest made him an exceptional person to meet. We will always keep him in good memory!

My favorite thing to do when visiting Upland with Mike was to come hang out with Don and Bunny, along with all the other family and friends. You inspired so many young people in your life, you made a difference in those lives, and you will be missed. I am lucky to know your daughters and their families as well. You and bunny are holding hands again. Love, Mikey

I've been thinking about you for a week now...trying hard to find the words to express how much I miss you. I've been remembering with fondness some of our chats during rehearsals with you at the piano. One of my favorites was the time you made notes all over my sheet music telling me that I was gonna "Sing it more like Streisand and less like Garland." You sang at my wedding, came to our 10 year reunion because I begged you to and always had nothing but kind things to say to me. You were a wonderful teacher and person and the world is a little less brighter now that you have left. I love you Mr. Bowers....

Mr. B was a fantastic soul. By far my favorite teacher and the one who helped get me through high school! Not only did he teach music but he taught us many life lessons as only he could do! Later in my adult life he still touched me with his generosity, kindness, and talent! He will be missed! My condolences to all. I know he will be remembered and loved!
