Roger Aeschliman Obituary

Roger Charles Aeschliman
July 1, 1929 - January 18, 2018
Roger Aeschliman passed away peacefully on January 18, 2018. It was the end of a life filled with an incredible love for his family with his world revolving around his devoted wife, Diane.
For nearly four decades, Roger and Diane provided a loving, welcoming home as a place for the family to gather - wherever they lived—on the road during their RV days, on the Mendocino Coast in Irish Beach, up in Lake Arrowhead, and finally, Upland.
Roger is survived by his children Linda Rigby, Karen (John) Deist, Charlie (Toni) Aeschliman, and Susan Schnack. He is also survived by his step-children Bob (Stephanie) Chamberlin, Carrie Corder, and Casey (Danny) Costa. He also leaves a combined family count of 15 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his older sister Alice Wolfe of Kent, CT.
Roger was born in Cannes France in 1929 to two international tennis players. He was raised in Brookline, MA, graduating from Brookline High School (as a member of the two State Championship football teams). He attended Boston University where he received a B.S. degree in Business Administration, graduating Magna Cum Laude in Accounting. Roger was a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army during the Korean War. After his service to our country he started his career as a mainframe computer salesman with IBM and worked there for almost 35 years.
After retiring from IBM, Diane and Roger spent 13 years in Irish Beach where Roger sold real estate, served on the Water Board, and was a volunteer firefighter. In their coastal home, Roger and Diane hosted many magical gatherings for all of their grown children and their grandchildren. They continued this tradition when they moved to Lake Arrowhead for a few years, and family gatherings remained the focus of their lives after settling in Upland for the past 15 years.
During their time together, Diane and Roger traveled regularly to Europe and also criss crossed the USA many times. Roger loved road trips and was a human navigator. He attended many sporting events of his grandchildren where he was a fixture in the bleachers as their #1 fan (just as he had been while raising his four children in Wheaton IL.)
Roger was a gentleman. He loved the simple pleasures in life like reading 3 daily newspapers, mowing the lawn, jogging on Irish Beach, doing the crossword puzzle with Diane, making his bologna and peanut butter and cheese sandwiches, playing board games when the grandchildren gathered, watching his daily stock market shows, and foremost being by Diane's side, not only looking forward to the wonderful dinners she made for him every night, but feeling her ever-present love from all she did to care for him.

I got to know Roger back in the 80's as I was a young IBM'er in OakBrook, Illinois. Despite him being an older, smarter veteran of the company, Roger always made time for the younger rookies. Roger always struck me as a quiet, yet brilliant guy..with a good heart and a wonderful, wry sense of humor. So long after that time, he is one colleague I'll always remember. My condolences to his family, for your loss. As I'm sure you all know, he was one of the good-guys.

I'm glad I got to know you, Grandpa. I'll always remember the Xmases we had at Irish Beach, and your "dad jokes"---or perhaps they were "granddad jokes". I'll miss you.

Grandpa - I am so thankful you got to meet your great-grandson Indy. While you weren't able to say any words, the smile on your face said it all. It was a perfect couple of hours and it makes saying "goodbye" easier. I am also thankful you got to meet Ian and pull out your atlas and ask him questions about where he comes from in Australia. I loved family Christmases and family reunions growing up and loved hearing stories about your childhood and speaking French. We love you!

I always enjoyed being around Roger & Diane! Some of my fondest memories are the Christmases in Irish Beach with the whole family around and Diane's wonderful cooking! Later on, I really appreciated Roger & Diane's support & friendship as I went through some fairly major changes in my life. They were always there for me, Brian & Megan. Later on they embraced Jackie, which meant a lot to me. Once I moved to Asia, it became more difficult to see them as often. Jackie & I did stay with them once while they lived in the mountains and I had dinners with Roger & Diane in Brussels & London over the years of their European traveling. He was a great guy, fun to hang around with and have interesting discussions with. I wish I could have seen more of Roger & Diane over the past few years. I know he will be missed, and thank you Diane for your loving support. All the best and enjoy the family gathering this weekend!

I will miss my Dad's whistling and am very glad that he got baptized at the end. We were very fortunate to have good relatives from my mother's family (Betty, died 1965) and my stepmother's (Jacqueline, died 1977). He went through a lot with the loss of those two but I am happy he finally found a wife who lasted (even if caring for my Dad at the end nearly did Diane in). Diane probably gave him three more decades of life. Blessings to his soul!
