Sue Mansfield Obituary

Sue Mansfield of Pomona died Oct. 31, 2002 in Pomona. A retired Professor of History and Coordinator of Intercollegiate Woman's Program, she was born on Jan. 10, 1931 in Cumberland, Maryland and a resident of Pomona for 36 years. She was employed by Claremont McKenna College and Claremont Graduate School for 30 years,retiring in 1996. Earlier in her career she taught at Occidental College in Eagle Rock Ca. and Wheaton College in Norton Massachusetts. Sue grew up in the mountains of Maryland. She graduated from Wellesley College in Mass. As an A.B. cum laude in English Literature. She was also Durant Scholar, and Phi Beta Kappa. She received her PhD and her masters from Radcliffe Graduate School i n "Modern European History.' She was a Danforth Fellow from 1952-1958. Sue taught History for many years at Claremont. She was one of the founding leaders for the Intercollegiate Woman's Studies Program. Sue received the Roy P. Crocker Award for Merit in 1990. She wrote 3 books, "The Gestalts of War", "The Rites of War", and "Some Reasons for War" which she co-authored with Mary Bowen Hall, which received the 1989 Olive Branch Award. She also co-authored "Why Are There Wars" and wrote the introduction to J.S. Mill. "The Subjection of Woman." She was Co-Coordinator of the Pacific-Southwest Woman's Studies Association from 1991 till 1996. She was a member of the National Woman's Studies Association from 1991 till 2000, during which she was co-chair for 2 years and a member of the Governing Committee for 7 years. She was a member and Senior Warden of Christ Church in Ontario. She worked tirelessly for the church for over 30 years. Her husband David Brewer of Pomona survives Sue. She is also survived by her niece Susan Clark and her children Cassandra Mansfield, Jacob Clark, and Tamika Dixon all of Chapel Hill, North Carolina. A Celebration of Sue's life will be held at Christ Church Parish at 1127 N. San Antonio Ave in Ontario on Nov. 10, 2002 at 2 p.m. Memorial Contributions may be made to Christ Church Parish, Ontario. Cucamonga Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
