CHARLES "CHUCK" HODGES
Nov. 3, 1941 - Apr. 19, 2012
Charles "Chuck" Hodges played the hand he was dealt; born November 3, 1941 and died April 19, 2012. He was known to many by several nicknames, such as Hard as Nails, Mirror Man, Chucky Cheese, Wimpy, Honey, Dad, and Pa Pa, but what he really loved was to crown a carefully chosen nickname on one of his many friends and relatives.
His love of gambling was well known, and he would bet on underwater basket weaving if there was a line on it. He was an accomplished craps player, and was considered "too skilled a player" and banned forever from a casino. He loved to take novice gamblers to Las Vegas and teach them how to, "throw the bones."
He was a product of the Wild West, born in Douglas, AZ, but raised in his family home in Yuma, AZ, coming from a distinguished line of founding pioneers of the Territory of Arizona. His great-grandparents were Frances M. Hodges and Francisca Ferra of La Paz, and Isaac Polhamus (the last steam boat Captain on the Colorado River) and Sacramento Sambrano of La Paz. His Grandfather, Peter Hodges (who was killed by an Indian), and Agnes Polhamus produced this gentle giant of a father, Isaac "Buster" Polhamus Hodges, who married Zola Cox, all of Yuma, Az. When Zola died, Buster married Evelyn Rasco. His ancestors were river boat captains, shop keepers, mine owners, cattle ranchers, sheriffs, saloon and hotel owners, and a state legislator.
Chuck received his primary education in El Centro, California, where friends knew him as the "Unofficial Mayor of Mexicali." Chuck then moved to Indio where he became the youngest manager of the Indio Bowling Alley. He bowled the first, league sanctioned 300-point game in Coachella Valley and over the years bowled four perfect games.
Chuck worked for Kaiser Steel at Eagle Mountain for 10 years before joining the sales department of Sun World International, a local produce farming and marketing company. Chuck's transition from mining steel to growing vegetables was a successful one; Chuck ended his career with Sun World as Senior Vice President of Sales. He then formed his own produce marketing company, C H Sales, in 1992. In 1993, C H Sales merged with Sun & Sands Enterprises to form Prime Time International and together they succeeded in becoming the largest grower of colored bell peppers in the United States.
His family and friends knew him to be generous, kind, and loving. His favorite saying was "Everyone's gotta live!" He would give a $100 tip to the shoe shine boy, waitress, or his favorite valet. He loved to drop a Franklin on the ground behind a homeless person and say "Sir, Sir you dropped this" leaving them their dignity, or buying the little old lady a bouquet of roses in the check out line.
He loved people! He delighted in giving them joy and sharing his wealth. His favorite game was being the consummate Host. If he allowed you to buy dinner, he always sprung for a special dessert; but be prepared for a charter flight to Vegas to enjoy that dessert.. His world was Camelot, and he made each person who entered feel like a Queen or King. He was known for his fondness of red wine and chili peppers. He always had peppers in his pocket, eating a pound a week with his food, and never leaving the country without his stash.
Apart from his professional life, Chuck was a member of the Palm Springs Men's Club and delighted taking their money in a friendly hand of poker. He served on the board of directors of the Well in the Desert and Pegasus Riding Academy. Among his many achievements, Chuck was selected in 2006 by California Women for Agriculture as "Agriculturalist of the Year" and in 2007, the Palm Springs Walk of Stars awarded Chuck and his wife Gayle with a star for their outstanding Humanitarianism and Entrepreneurs.
Chuck was an avid supporter of the Future Farmers of America and was a generous bidder at the Riverside County Fair Junior Livestock Auction for over 25 years, buying hundreds of animals and donating the meat to charity. He supported the YMCA, Boys and Girls Clubs, Palm Canyon Theatre, Christian School of the Desert, Guide Dogs of the Desert, Angel View, and many other charities.
On the evening of his death, he was surrounded by his family and loved ones as he took his last breath, fighting his last round with cancer, and folding his last hand.
Chuck is survived by his loving wife, Gayle; sons, Chris Hodges of Morongo Valley, CA, James Hodges (Shannon), of Indio, CA; stepson, Rollo (Jenny Page) of Santa Rosa Beach, three step daughters, Kim Hodges of Morongo Valley, Margie Welch of Morongo Valley, and Lisa Hodges of Desert Hot Springs, CA; grandchildren, Kurysa, Jeremy, Nathan, James, Christen, Bryan, Sara, Sandra, and Alexis; sister, Ginger Mills (Aubrey) of Keremeos, B.C., Holly Williams of Peyton, CO, and brother David Storch of Tucson, AS; many nieces and nephews, and was preceded in death by his sister, Jenny Miller of Mesa, AZ, and parents Buster and Evelyn Hodges of Indio.
Chuck will always be remembered for his immense generosity. He gave freely to friend and stranger without ever needing thanks. Everyday of Chuck's life was truly better than the last. Chuck will be missed by his family, and the many friends, with whom he has shared a laugh, a bet, or offered a hand.
The family has requested in lieu of flowers, donations to be made to the Well in the Desert, PO Box 5312, Palm Springs, CA 92263 or Pegasus Riding Academy, 35450 Pegasus CT, Palm Desert, CA.
A Celebration of Life will be held on June 16, 2012 at the Cahuilla Ball Room from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Agua Caliente Casino Resort Spa, 32-250 Bob Hope DR, Rancho Mirage, CA 92270 Please call 760-262-1938 if attending.

I knew Charles at Central High School and ran around with the same group. He was always fun and kind. He was so smart and helped me a few times using his remarkable smarts. I lost contact with him, but had always hoped I would run across him. He turned out just the way I would of thought he would, loved by many and liked by the rest. Warm blessings to the family, you were so fortunate to have him in your life.

I was checking the IV Press obituaries as I grew up in El Centro. I don't know Mr. Hodges but I wish I had. My husband and I were raised by parents of his generation. We had good morals instilled in us to be good people. We try to help those in need and give our smiles to those without one. If only we had the money, we would help so many! There's no greater joy than being of service to others any way one can. My thoughts and prayers go out to you Mrs Hodges and every person touched by his life.

Dear Gayle, Peter and I will always feel so privileged to have known Chuck. It's rare to find such an authentic human being. We loved him very much and will always feel blessed that we took that flight to LA 11 years ago and the drama that unfolded made us such good friends

Dear Gayle, It was an honor and a pleasure to know Chuck, first as a patient and then as a wonderful friend who brought you into my life as well. He was the consummate friend, teaching me craps too! Sharing the wonderful gifts of the earth with me, a personal tour of the Prime Time farm and always bringing a smile into my day even when the workplace was hectic. I have many treasured memories of his large heart and time spent at your home. It was a great honor to be included into his world, and yours. Escargot was a treasure to be shared(and fought over). The world is an emptier now but he left us better people. I will hold my memories of him close to my heart always, they are my living treasure. God bless you.

Dear Gayle and family,
To us, Chuck was a true friend. We will miss him greatly. His word was his bond and in today's world, that is a treasured quality. We will always have the good times to reflect upon...our Living Sanctuary adventure, our Scottsdale and Taos trips, the Buddy Greco Supper Club evenings, the whale trip, our dinners & shows, our walks and talks. These memories are special and we hold them dearly. Our love goes out to you Gayle. You and Chuck created so many wonderful memories for so many people. Chuck was a big slice of life and he will live with us in our hearts forever.

Chuck was my first boss out of college and I learned many lessons from him that still serve me today. I still fondly remember the Saturday afternoon trips to Laughlin for the 1,2,3,5,5,10 program.
Never lost money when I bet with chuck.
Thank you Chuck for your mentoring and patience as you taught me your side of the produce business. Always an encouraging word and a good joke to make hard days easier.
My heartfelt sympathies go out to Chuck's family. May God bring you comfort in your time of loss.

It was my honor to be one of Chuck's "novice" crap players in 1989. He was a wonderful man. Barb Markovich
I had the utmost respect for Chuck, his business ethics were beyond reproach. He was more than a business associate, he was a friend. I can still hear him sing "I don't care where the money comes from". And I will always remember 1.2.3.5.5.10.Thank you Chuck and God Bless. Steve Markovich Chicago, IL

So sorry to read of Chuck's passing.
Although He did'nt know it, he was a great example to me. Always kind, fair, considerate and cordial. In business or in social. I never heard him say anything mean or inconsiderate, maybe he did, but I never heard it. In reading his obit, it appears he lived a full life, making an impact and difference in whatever he chose to do. His love and respect for others always leading the way, sharing and giving came natural for him.
He was manager of the Indio Bowling Alley!? What a hoot, I remember my first visit there as a child, 6-7 years old in wonder of the noise game. Chuck would be proud to know I have sold that old building 3 times.
I will always remember Chuck fondly.
Goodbye my friend,

It is an honor to say I knew Chuck...as a neighbor. He opened his home every year at Christmas to celebrate the holiday season. Beside the beautiful tractor with thousands of lights...Chuck lit up eyes of so many children with gifts, Santa and photos..wow..it was truly an amazing event. Three years ago when they were getting ready to take the tractor back, my 3 year old granddaughter and I were outside and Chuck made a point to stop and turn the lights on the tractor. She will be 6 this Christmas and she still talks about it. Thank you Chuck..may you rest in peace. Gayle my prayers are with you. We are here for you.

My first memory of uncle Chuck was going to Dodger Stadium when I was five years old. He taught me more life lessons than anyone I have ever known. I once asked him many years ago how he would like to be remembered when his life was over, and he answered, "I would like for peoples' lives to be better for having known me." I think it's safe to say his wish was granted.

I was the stereotypical "boss' kid" when I first started working at SunWorld and later CH Sales/Prime Time. Chuck never condescended and pushed me to be more than "the rumor." He helped me grow as a man. I'll never forget when I got my first nickname from Chuck. Getting a "handle", whether you actually liked the name or not, meant you were accepted. It was a gift... and now I'm sure he's working on a good one for God, Himself! Rest in peace, Chucky. We lost a good one. One of the best ever.

To Gayle and all the family and friends this great man had... I wish you peace during this difficult time. Not everyone can leave their wife and loved ones with such happy, loving, and I am sure very unique memories to hold onto. I know I have some of my own from the 19 years that I was privaleged to know him. He has been so missed by here at Prime Time since his fight with his illness started. Even with knowing how serious it was, and that he may not win the fight, the finality of losing him has still hit hard. Thank you to Gayle and all for being by his side and for helping this generous, kind, special man fight as hard as he did. "Chuckie, no one else can call me Blondie"!

DEAREST GAYLE AND FAMILY...IN READING THIS BEAUTIFUL TRIBUTE , OUR DISELIEF , REMAINS. LARGER THAN LIFE AND OUR "BROTHER FROM ANOTHER MOTHER", OUR BEST PAL "CHUCKLES' REMAINS WITH US NOW, AS HE WILL FOREVER. THE YEARS OF LAUGHTER AND WILD ADVENTURES WITH OUR PEPPER TOTING COWBOY IN BLACK BOOTS...THE MEMORIES.. TO LAST OUR LIFETIMES. THE "TOUGH AS NAILS" EXTERIOR DID NOT OUTWEIGH HIS SOFT TENDERNESS FOR A STRAY PUPPY OR A DEEP EMOTION FOR HIS FELLOW HUMAN BEING IN STRIFE. A ROLE MODEL IN LIFE ..FOREVER..LIVING ON IN OUR HEARTS. AND WHEN WE SEE SOMEONE WHO NEEDS A HAND..WE WILL ASK OURSELVES, "WHAT WOULD CHARLIE DO?" THE ANSWER ..BE THERE TO HELP! MAY YOUR WARM AND WONDERFUL MEMORIES TOGETHER, HOLD YOU VERY CLOSE. WE CHERISH THAT WE KNEW AND LOVED THIS AMAZING AND INCREDIBLE COWBOY. AS IN LIFE, HE CONTINUES TO WATCH OVER ALL OF US ..JUST AT A HIGHER "TABLE". I worked with him at Sun World for 10 yrs and am so appreciative of his love and patience and giving me the opportunity to learn something new without any experience under my belt.

I'm looking forward to seeing him once again just as many of you are, and hearing all about the impact he is now making on those who have gone before us! My love to your family.
