Dionisio (Nicho) Quintero Santana, 92, of Brawley passed away Tuesday, August 30, 2011 in La Jolla. He was born July 8, 1919 to Francisca Quintero and Felix Santana. Mr. Santana arrived in Brawley, California under the "Bracero Program" on September 1943, during dove season.
Dionisio worked as an irrigator/farm laborer for T.B. and Floyd Shank. He continued actively gardening and enjoying all his family. His other pastimes included visiting his children, grandchildren throughout California and Arizona, and sisters in Jalisco, México. He was very proud of the accomplishments of his family. His love, charisma, charm, and humor will never be forgotten.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Salvador and Felix; sisters, Encarnacion Santana Morales, Rosa Ester Santana Silva, and Juana Santana Lepe.
Dionisio is survived by his wife, Josefina of Brawley; sons, Dionisio Jr. (Lupe), Frank (Yoli) of Yuma, Harvey (Elsa) of San Diego, Tony (Inez), Gabriel (Donna) of Valley Center, Johnny (Lorena) of Brawley, George (Sandra) of Salinas, Mike, Richard, and Joe of San Diego; daughters, Rosalinda (Rudy Cárdenas Jr.), Frances (Jaime Nuñez), of Brawley, Anita (Ray Avila), of Vista, and Maria "Chayo" (Jose Ceseña) of El Cajon; daughter-in-law, Sally Santana of Brawley; two older sisters, Anastacia Santana Ruelas, and Arcadia Santana Ruelas of Tecolotlán, Jalisco, Mexico.
He also leaves behind 40 grandchildren, who will greatly miss their hero: Andrew, Adam, Alex, Anthony, Yesenia, Frankie (Cheyanne), Matthew, Nicholas (Christina), Michelle, Stephanie, Eli, Jacob, Antonio, Isaac, Trinity, Richard, Adrian, Ashley, Christopher, Hailie, Amber, J.J., Jacqueline, Julian, Joseph, David, Jonathon and Rio Santana, Rudy III, Jennifer, Natalia and John Cárdenas, Roberto, Daniela and Jocelyn Nuñez, Ricardo and Anysia Avila, Gabriel and Isaac Ceseña and Alyson (Bobby) Ramirez; 9 great-grandchildren: Briana, Jeremy, Julian, Frankie Rae, Aiden and Nicholas Jr. Santana, Audrey and Jacob Ramirez and Rose Avila.
Visitation and rosary will take place Monday, September 5 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Frye Chapel in Brawley.
Mass is scheduled for 9 a.m. Tuesday morning at St. Margaret Mary Church in Brawley. He will be laid to rest at Riverview Cemetery immediately following.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made towards Jorge Santana Medical Expense Fund, Comerica Bank, 430 S. Main Street, Salinas, CA, Tax ID# 90-0722275. Jorge, the youngest of Mr. Santana's children, is battling Mantle Cell Lymphoma and will be undergoing bone marrow transplant/immunotherapy at Stanford University in the next few weeks.

Mrs. Santana and Entire Family,

What never ceases to amaze is how a man with such humble beginnings was able to raise such a succesful group of children...I hope to be able to do that with one child, he will never be gone because he lives through all his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
