EMILIE ALARCON Obituary

EMILIE S. ALARCON

July 25, 1925 Oct. 7, 2021

Emilie S. Alarcon lived a full life and passed away on October 7, 2021. Emilie was born on July 25, 1925 in the Imperial Valley. Her parents, Fidel and Virginia Gomez, both immigrated to the U.S. and settled in the Imperial Valley around 1900.

Emilie grew up on the Gomez family dairy in Brawley with her six sisters. She graduated from Brawley Union High School and Imperial Valley College. Before finishing her degree she married, Henry Alarcon in 1948 and the pair shared 70 years together. They raised four children, Erlinda Lee, Emilie Montgomery, Henry (Pam) Alarcon, and Gene (Cindy) Alarcon.

After many happy years centered on her family, and many Sunday dinners with her sisters on the farm, Emilie decided to finish her degree and obtain a teaching credential. She attended San Diego State University earning first her teaching credential followed by her Masters of Education degree in 1974.

She began her career in 1975 at Ben Hulse Elementary in Imperial where she taught for 6 years. Many people in our community hold pleasant memories of Mrs. A from her 30 years of teaching at various schools and grade levels across the El Centro School District. She would retire in 1995 from Wilson Jr. where she taught Spanish and math. When out and about in the community her previous students would jokingly greet her with a smile and a Hola Paco. Que Tal?

Along with supporting her husbands activities on the City Council, she was active in her community and Church. She volunteered at Our Lady of Guadalupe as a faith formation teacher and lector. She also volunteered at the El Centro Regional Medical Center. Emilie was also a member of the California Teachers Association (CTA), and served many positions with them. She was a negotiator for El Centro teachers, a building representative and president of UNISERVE from 1987 to 1988.

She enjoyed gardening, traveling, collecting antiques and hallmark items. However, most of all she loved being with her 9 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

Emilie is survived by her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren as well as her sister, Mary (Ed) Valazquez and Virgina Jane Booth along with numerous nieces, and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Alarcon; her parents, Fidel & Virginia Gomez; sisters and sons in law, Rita & Milliedge Boyce, Evelyan & Raul Aragon, Beatrice Arce, and Lily & Steve Grudichak.

Emilie lived the final years of her life and Heart and Hand in El Centro. The family is forever grateful to the staff and administrators for creating such a loving and caring home for our beloved Emilie.

Emilie was truly an outstanding member of her community, and at the very heart of her loving family. She will forever be remembered and dearly loved.

Services will be held on April 7, 2022 at Our Lady of Guadalupe: 153 E Brighton Ave, El Centro beginning with a rosary at 9 AM with mass, gravesite services, and reception directly following.

I was in grade school when I first met Mrs. Alarcon. She was teaching the pilot Spanish classes for young people. I then went on to learn Spanish from her during my high school years and she as also part of my personal life during my junior and high school years. She had a wonderful sense of humor but was also quick to let you know if she was unhappy with you. I have wonderful memories of both Mr. & Mrs. Alarcon and my sympathies go out to Linda, Henry, Emily and Gene.
