GEORGE FOWLKES Obituary

GEORGE BRANDEAU FOWLKES JR.

May 7, 1943 – Oct. 12, 2025

George was born in El Centro to Brandeau (Brandy) and Elizabeth Fowlkes of Imperial, CA on May 7, 1943. George grew up in Imperial the oldest of three children. He, JoCarroll, and Alan Fowlkes all were proud graduates of Imperial High School. George spent his childhood fishing the canals around the valley, hunting waterfowl with his father and friends, and played three sports at Imperial; basketball, track, and baseball. He was team MVP of his high school baseball team 3 straight years, and was honored to accept a chance to play college baseball for Cal Poly Pomona. He graduated with a mathematics degree and was drafted in the 25th round to pitch for the Philadelphia Phillies. He spent 4 years in the minors before focusing on returning to college and marrying his lifelong love: Lonna Becker. They married in 1974, and remained together until their passing. George and Lonna had three children: Kimberley, Loreena, and Christopher Fowlkes. George taught mathematics at Central Union High School for 38 years, and classes at IVC for more than 20 years. George spent his free time doing what he loved most: fishing, hunting, gardening, and playing softball. He played in the Borona Fastpitch Softball League for 15 years, and won MVP of the league 10 times. George retired in 2007 and lived for a short time in Texas, then returned to California not long after Lonna passed. George has 7 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. He passed peacefully in his sleep the night of October 12, 2025.

His celebration of life will be held at Frye's Chapel in Brawley on November 12, from 12 to 3 p.m. Any pictures or stories are welcome on the Frye Chapel website. Repast will be hosted by Dane and Pat Thompson at 522 West Murphy Road, in Imperial.

George was a good man. He wrote in my CUHS LaSolana (Yearbook), "give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, he'll eat every day," (or something like that). George was also very happy to share his gardening tips. I know George will be missed, and many others will have good memories of him. Peace and condolences to his family.

My deepest condolences to the Fowlkes Family. Mr. Folkestone was my math teacher at central union high school. He was very nice and I learned to like math because of him. May he RIP .

My condolences to the Fowlkes family on the passing of a fine man. I went through school in Imperial with George. He was one grade behind me. I also knew George as a fellow teacher in the CUHS District. George was a "Gentle Giant" large in stature and known for his patience with his Math students. In his retirement, he became quite an expert in gardening often giving away the fruits of his labor to others. I'm sure he's with Jesus now. He will be greatly missed.
